Effie E. Brewer

HENDERSON — Effie Ellington Brewer, age 98, a former resident of Coble Blvd., Henderson, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, in a local nursing home.

Born Aug. 6, 1914, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Nollie Mack Ellington and Addie Jackson Ellington. Mrs. Brewer was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Townsville by the Rev. Gary Brummitt and the Rev. Kathryn Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She is survived by four daughters, Allyne Greene of South Hill, Va., Jane Wright and husband, Billy, of Henderson, Rose Moody and husband, John, of Clarksville, Va., and Maxine McKinney and husband, Roger, of Bakersville; one sister, Mabel Wortham of Henderson; nine grandchildren, Michael Greene, Susan Harris, Lisa Bevell, Teresa Peeden, Cheryl Gazaleh, Mark Moody, Gerald Moody, Cale Moody and Steven McKinney; and 12 great-grandchildren, Scott Greene, Stephanie Hankley, Brandon Harris, David Harris, Jake Harris, Bryan Bevell, Heather Kretzschmar, Will Peeden, Kaitlyn Moody, Seth Moody, Sophia McKinney and Dylan McKinney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Riggan Brewer; three sisters; three brothers; a grandson, Jeffrey McKinney; and son-in-law, John “Bill” Greene.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Rose and John Moody at 25 Ponderosa Lane, Clarksville, Va.

Serving as active pall bearers will be Michael Greene, Mark Moody, Gerald Moody, Cale Moody, Steven McKinney, Will Peeden and Nick Gazaleh.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle United Methodist Church, c/o Sylvia Anderson, P.O. Box 203, Townsville, N.C. 27584.

Anthony H. Long

HENDERSON — Anthony Hugh “Tony” Long, 67, of 240 Wrenn Road, Oxford, (in the Watkins Community) died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Born in Granville County, he was the son of the late John Floyd Long and Lillie Dell Breedlove Long.

Mr. Long was retired after 35 years with St. Gobain Containers. He was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church.

Funeral services was held Monday, May 13, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Rehoboth United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Denvil Farley and the Rev. Will Breedlove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Gloria Crouse Long; a daughter, Tammy R. Long of the home; a son, Anthony Shawn Long and wife, Stacie, of Henderson; three sisters, Hazel L. Ramsey, Sally L. Pruitt and Janice L. Hayes, all of Oxford; a brother, George W. Long of Henderson; and six grandchildren, Brandon T. Manning, Megan R. Manning, Olivia L. Long, Emma P. Long, Landon S. Long and Amelia G. Long. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou L. Rogers; and two brothers, John F. Long Jr. and James A. “Jimmy” Long.

The family received friends Sunday, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they were at the home, 240 Wrenn Road, Oxford.

Serving as active pallbearers were Dale Pruitt, Kevin Long, Brian Long, Jamie Hayes, Andy Long, Michael Breedlove, Mike Breedlove and Scott Freeman.

Elnora W. Hargrove

DURHAM — Elnora Williams Hargrove, 59, resident of E. Spain Middleburg Road, Middleburg, died Friday, May 10, 2013, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

She was the daughter of Lucy Bullock Williams and the late Frank Williams.

She is survived by a husband, Thomas Earl Hargrove; two sons, Martez Hargrove and Maurice Hargrove, both of Middleburg; one brother, Frank Williams Jr. of Henderson; five sisters, Rose Perry of Middleburg, Catherine Magbie of Gillburg, and Mamie Coleman, Gloria Perez and Ella Murphy, all of Henderson; a mother, Lucy Bullock Williams, Henderson; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today, at 2 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford. Burial will immediately follow at St. John Baptist Church in Middleburg. A viewing took place Monday, May 13, 2013, from noon-6 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.

Lorenza Hicks

BULLLOCK — Lorenza Hicks, a resident of Tudy Drive, Bullock, died Sunday at her home.

Ruby S. Moon

OXFORD — Ruby Smith Moon, 89, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Monday, May 13, 2013, at Granville House in Oxford.

A native of Wake County, she was the widow of William Lewis Moon and the daughter of the late Walter and Vashti Yeargin Smith. She was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and retired from Burlington Industries with 43 years of service.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at 11 a.m., in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Wes Garner Jr. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Oxford.

Survivors include: four sisters, Lois S. Hicks, Jeanette S. Mangum and Ann S. Ellis, all of Garner, Gladys S. Medlin of Clayton; and a brother, Wade Smith of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by brothers, Parker Smith and Simon Smith.

Visitation will take place Wednesday, from 9:30-10:45 a.m., prior to the funeral service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home of Ricky and Barbara Satterwhite.
