Jayne M. Bennett

HENDERSON — Jayne Martin Bennett, age 53, a resident of 3599 Hicksboro Road, died suddenly Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at her home.

Born on Oct. 14, 1959, in Vance County, she was the daughter of Dorothy Dickerson Martin of Henderson and the late Vernon Martin; and the granddaughter of the late Rosetta Dickerson Hoyle and Eugene Dickerson.

She was a medically retired nurse at Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation, where she worked for 15 years, and was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her loving husband of more than 36 years, Leonard Wayne Bennett of the home; one daughter, Tina B. Ellis and husband, James, of Goldsboro; one son, Jonathan Bennett and wife, Stephanie, of Henderson; two sisters, Libby M. Gutshall and Judy M. Thomas of Henderson; three beloved grandchildren, Mallory Bennett, Tanner Bennett and Tyler Cain, who were the apple of her eye; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Jayne leaves behind precious memories to each and every one of her family members and truly lived for helping people. Her ability to help and care for everyone will be sorely missed. In the past few years she suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, known as COPD, but it didn’t change her outlook on life. She graced each day with a positive attitude and a smile.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Marshall Neathery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Wednesday at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of her mother, Dorothy Dickerson Martin, at 699 Mabry Mill Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization she held dear to her heart, the Vance County Relay For Life, PO Box 914, Henderson, NC 27536, or the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Foundation, 20 F Street NW, Suite 200 A, Washington, DC 20001.

Edith W. Currin

OXFORD — Edith Wilkerson Currin, age 92, died peacefully on Sept. 1, 2013.

She was the wife of the late William Frank Currin and the daughter of Melvin and Kate Wilkerson of Sims.

She was a 1944 graduate of East Carolina University with an A.B. degree in Home Economics and Social Studies. After teaching in Sanford for one year, she came to Oxford and taught Home Economics for five years. In 1962, she attended UNC Chapel Hill, where she received her Elementary Education degree. She then taught fourth grade and retired in 1977 after 20 years in education.

She was an educator, a loving mother, a devoted wife and a homemaker. She was an active member of Hester Baptist Church, where she served as Adult Sunday School Superintendent, taught the Adult Sunday School Class and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union, serving two terms as president.

She enjoyed participating in various community actives. She served as president of the Oxford Woman’s Club from 1988-1990. She received the Outstanding Woman’s Club Award in 1991, the Jaycees’ Woman of the Year award and was the Oxford Business and Professional Club Woman of the Year in 1993. She was a charter member of the Pickwick Papers literary club and a member of the Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international teachers fraternity.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, her mother and father and five of her siblings.

She is survived by her son, Michael Currin, and his wife, Lauren, of Oxford, a grandson, Daniel Currin, his wife Missy, and great-grandson Monty and great-granddaughter Katie, all of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Casey Reagan, and her husband, Wen, of Durham; a daughter, Susan Lankenau, and her husband, Harry, and a grandson, Will Lankenau, all of Charlottesville, Va.

Funeral services will be held at Hester Baptist Church on N.C. 96 North at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service during a luncheon hosted by the women of Hester Baptist Church. There will be a private family burial at Elmwood Cemetery.

Leona M. Perry

WARRENTON — Leona Mae Perry, 86, of 519 Perrytown Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Baptist Church in Warrenton. Rev. Eddie W. Lawrence, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Rock Memorial Gardens in Norlina.

HENDERSON — Jonathan Rucker, a Vance County native, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Betsy B. Strickland

HENDERSON — Betsy Bowen Strickland, 54, a resident of 201 White Tail Court, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery.

HENDERSON — Jerry L. Williams, 48, of 1533 Bearpond Road, died

Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Mitchell Baptist Church with Pastor Daniel Lilly officiating.

Viewing will be held from noon to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 3, at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
