Carlton W. Whitby
HENDERSON — Carlton Wheeler Whitby, 84, of 270 Carver School Road, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at his home.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Elam W. and Lona Harper Whitby.
Mr. Whitby retired as a first sergeant after 42 years in the North Carolina National Guard. He was a member of Carey Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and choir member. He was a member of the B.D. Adcock Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Carey Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Al James. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Ethel Shearin Whitby; two daughters, Debra W. Gill and husband Donald of Henderson and Judy W. Robinson and husband Tom of Luray, Virginia; a brother, Jack Whitby of Warren Plains; seven grandchildren, Wayne Gill and wife Amanda, Kristy Harp and husband Steve, Robby Gill and wife Krystal, Lisa Yost and husband Joseph, Thomas Robinson, Michael Robinson and wife Mandy and Katie Robinson; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher Harp, Taylor Harp, Dylan Kidd, Jackson Gill, Colton Gill and Elijah Gill.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elam Junior Whitby.
The family will receive friends today, July 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Carey Baptist Church. All other times, they will be at the home, 270 Carver School Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be William Cox, Marvin Cox, Brian Shearin, Ronnie Parker, Steve Ball, Jay Jarrell, Brad Weatherington, Benny Heath and Cameron Gill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carey Baptist Church, P.O. Box 637, Henderson, NC 27536.

Elizabeth O. Medlin
HENDERSON — Elizabeth Owen Matthews Medlin, 94, of 1204 Vicksboro Road, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Bailey Thomas Owen Sr. and Lena Gooch Owen. She was the widow of William Taylor Matthews and Hubert Jeffie Medlin.
Mrs. Medlin was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 10, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John W. Yount. Burial will follow in Stovall Memorial Cemetery.
Surviving are two sons, Rufus Taylor Matthews and wife Delores of Richmond, Virginia, and Eugene Newcomb “Buck” Matthews and wife Joyce of Henderson; a stepson, Fletcher Medlin and wife Christine of Buxton; three brothers, A.T. Owen of Waldorf, Maryland, Sam Owen of Raleigh and Bobby L. Stainback of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, William Thomas Matthews; a stepdaughter, Christine Pearce; a stepson, Curtis Medlin; and two brothers, Bailey Thomas Owen Jr. and Claude Gooch Owen.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Buck and Joyce Matthews, 412 Club Pond Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jeff Matthews, Scott Sims, Brian Medlin, Kenneth Rhodes, Carl Smith and Larry Smiley.

KITTRELL — Lloyd “Woody” Woodlief, age 84, a resident of 430 Cricket Creek Lane, died Monday, July 7, 2014.
Born July 6, 1930, in Vance County, he was the son of the late John Woodlief and Mary Stella Overton Woodlief. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War, and was a member of Central Baptist Church and the Faithful Servants Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11, at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church by Dr. Randy Mann and Dr. Bruce Beck. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Farmer Woodlief of the home; two daughters, Marybeth Davidson (Hank) of Hope Mills and Melissa Thomas of the home; one son, Peyton Woodlief (Faye) of Henderson; one brother, John Elton Woodlief (Marion) of Kittrell; seven grandchildren, Margo Gasque, Kelly Woodlief, Julia Davidson, Shannon Combs, Leah Woodlief, Luc Davidson and Daniel Woodlief; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church. At other times, they will be at the home at 430 Cricket Creek Lane.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dale Griffin, Dwight Frazier, Charles Granger, Walt Slaton, Hank Davidson and Justin Combs. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Faithful Servants Sunday School Class.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, P.O. Box 178, Henderson, NC 27536.

WARRENTON — Willie Perry, 67, of 445 Snow Hill Road, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.
