Jack W. Armstrong
WINSTON-SALEM — Jack W. Armstrong, formerly of Henderson, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Brookridge Retirement Home, where he had lived since 1999.
He was born Dec. 10, 1923, in Laurens, S.C., to Fannie Mae and Chaney Armstrong.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 35 years, Estelle Easterby Armstrong.
He served in World War II in the U.S. Army in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, where he received the Purple Heart for wounds received in service in November 1944.
He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in civil engineering in 1946.
Jack served as plant manager for Laurens Glass Works in Henderson from 1959 to 1972 and retired from Laurens Glass in 1974 as vice president and assistant to the president. While in Henderson, he was active in the community and served on the board of directors of Maria Parham Hospital for over 18 years, including a term as chairman of the board.
Both Jack and Estelle were active members of First Baptist Church in Henderson, where he will be interred.
Besides his family, his two passions were golf and the Clemson Tigers.
He is survived by his son, William E. Armstrong of Denver, Colo.; three grandsons, Bill Jr., Brian and Spencer Armstrong; three great-granddaughters; a nephew, Chaney Jr.; and a niece, Charlotte Holland.
The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staff members of Blessed Assurance Nursing Care, Molly Bohn and his niece-in-law, Laura Ferguson Esleeck, all of whom provided loving care to Jack during his time at Brookridge.
A private memorial service will be held in Henderson.
The family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 75, Henderson, NC 27536, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Lula M. Satterwhite
HENDERSON — Lula Mary Moss Satterwhite, age 84, a resident of 1245 Park Ave., died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Born in Vance County on Oct. 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Moss and Edith Renn Moss, and was the widow of Merrell Carlton Satterwhite.
Mrs. Satterwhite was an avid bowler and upholstered furniture for many years in Vance County; she was a former member of Grace Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Will Breedlove and the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by four sons, Carlton Satterwhite Jr. and wife Rose and Steve Satterwhite and wife Marilyn of Henderson, Doug Satterwhite and wife Carolyn of Kittrell and Glenn Satterwhite of Henderson; one daughter, Brenda S. Lane of Kittrell; one brother, Allen Moss and wife Esther of Henderson; two sisters, Fannie Pendergrass and husband John of Henderson and Betsy Dement of Creedmoor; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Chever; one sister, Rosa Averette; one brother, Ed Moss; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends prior to the service on Sunday from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Carlton and Rose Satterwhite, at 250 Weybossett Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Carlton Satterwhite Jr., Carlton Satterwhite III, Jimmy Waddell, Jimmy Waddell Jr., Greg Brame, John Juntunen, T.J. Satterwhite and Robbie Satterwhite.

Cora L. Parham
OXFORD — Cora Brooks Longmire Parham, 87, of 8137 Hicksboro Road, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Brantwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oxford.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Washington Longmire Sr. and Hassie Boothe Nelson Longmire.
She was the widow of Marion Oliver “Mayland” Parham Jr.
Mrs. Parham was a homemaker. She was a member of Island Creek Baptist Church.
A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, March 30, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Gardens, conducted by the Rev. J. Marshall Neathery.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn P. Moss and husband Wade of Henderson and Evelyn Lee Parham of Wake Forest; a grandson, Kevin Moss and wife Sarah of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Alex Moss of Raleigh and Ava Moss of Durham; and three sisters-in-law, Emogene M. Longmire of Henderson, Faye B. Parham of Oxford and Sylvia R. Parham of Oxford.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Keith Moss; four sisters, Evelyn C. Longmire, Norma L. Longmire, Virginia L. Harris and Dorothy L. Rivers; and five brothers, Henry W. Longmire Jr., W. Nelson Longmire, Allison C. Longmire, R. Chandler Longmire and Theodore A. “Ted” Longmire.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. All other times, they will be at the home of Carolyn and Wade Moss, 104 Fernwood Creek Court, Henderson, NC 27536.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

MANSON — Samuel Henderson, 82, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

BURKE, Va. — Sue Eaton Hopkins, formerly of Henderson, N.C., 57, died March 23, 2014.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, March 29, at Progressive Faith Baptist Church in Henderson, N.C. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens in Henderson.

Ollie R. Thorne
RICHMOND, Va. — Ollie R. Thorne, 87, formerly of Warren County, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.
A funeral will be held at noon Sunday, March 20, at the Reformed Zion Union Apostolic Churches of America Headquarters, 2721 Rocky Branch Road, La Crosse. Interment will follow in the Roanoke Chapel United Church of Christ Cemetery in Palmer Springs.
Viewing is today, March 29, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the chapel of R.H. Greene Funeral Home in Warrenton, N.C., and at the church one hour prior to the service.
