Catherine S. Gentry

ROXBORO — Catherine Scott Gentry, 93, of 211 Ridge Road, Roxboro, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013.

Born in Caswell County, Mrs. Gentry was the daughter of the late George L. and Lena Lea Scott, and wife of the late Reade Gentry.

She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Catherine Moorefield; her son-in-law, Richard M. Johnson; and her siblings, George Scott, John Scott, Cornelia Strickland and Caroline Foote.

Mrs. Gentry retired from Wachovia and was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Gentry is survived by three daughters, Connye Moorefield and husband, Bill, of Gibsonville, Georgye Woody and husband, Skip, of Chapel Hill and Cappye Headman and husband, John, of Henderson; her sister-in-law, Jean Scott, of Milton; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Connally United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Upton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., today at her home.

Lillie F. Norman

MOREHEAD CITY — Lillie Chaney Fowlkes Norman, 91, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City surrounded by family members.

She has been a resident of Carolina House in Morehead City since 2008 and was formerly a resident of Henderson. She was born on Feb. 6, 1921, in Forsyth County to Barnie Simeon Fowlkes and Versa Etta Chaney Fowlkes. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ellis Norman; and by a son, Jimmy Lynn Norman. Chaney is survived by one sister, Rubye Fowlkes Hartgrove of Dunn.

A service celebrating Chaney’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Henderson at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, with Dr. Marion Lark officiating. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall immediately after the church service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Sue Kelly Library of First Baptist Church, Post Office Box 75, Henderson, NC 27536.

Chaney was employed for many years as a librarian at the H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library of Henderson and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Henderson. She was a member of the Old Bute Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Vance County Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Chaney is survived by a daughter, Mary Susan Norman Craver and husband, John Wade Craver, of Morehead City; and by granddaughter, Kathryn Jane Craver Lindsay, and husband, Robert Lindsay of Cullowhee; and granddaughter, Elisabeth Chaney Craver Denmon; and great-granddaughter, Maya Elise Denmon of Sylva. She is survived by a son, Larry Ellis Norman and wife, Alice Shearon Norman, of Spring Hope; and grandson, James Ellis Norman II and wife, Brandi Morgan Norman; and step-grandson, Daniel Morgan of Raleigh; and grandson, William Blair Norman, also of Raleigh. She is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Suzanne Mahaney and husband, Mike Mahaney, and children Lauren, Julia and Ella of Atlanta, Ga.; and step-grandson, Anthony Bartholomew and wife, Jamie Bartholomew, and children, Ian, Jacob and Sarah of Greenville.

The family wishes to thank all of Chaney’s friends for their prayers and support during her illness and expresses special thanks to the staff of Carolina House of Morehead City for their loving and compassionate care during Chaney’s time there and to the staff of Carteret General Hospital for their excellent care for Chaney during her recent illness.

WARRENTON — Elizabeth Jiggetts Edwards, 84, of Warrenton, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Warren Hills Nursing Center in Warrenton.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at 1 p.m., at Oak Level United Church of Christ in Manson. Rev. Leon White, pastor, will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Willard D. Senior of Manson, Thomas Jr. of Midlothian, Va., and Wonnie of Virginia Beach, Va.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Argatha Jackson of New York and Lalla Davis of Charlotte.

The body will be on view Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Mattie G. Palmer

OXFORD — Mattie Green Palmer, 89, a resident of 223 W. College St., Oxford, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Universal Health Care.

She was the daughter of the late George Lewis and Lavinia Green Lewis. She was a member of Baptist Grove Baptist Church where she served as a missionary and was a member of the senior choir, kitchen committee and pastor’s aid committee. She was a former employee of Adam’s Tobacco Company.

She is survived by four sisters, Earline Wiggins of Chester, Va., and Barbara Alston, Ella Marrow and Bessie Davis, all of Oxford; one brother, John Henry Lewis of South Carolina; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wallace Lewis and the Rev. George L. Bullock. Burial will be in the Baptist Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Viewing will began Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors at the residence of Bessie Davis, 6601 Clearwater St., Oxford.


Anna B. Reid

MANSON — Anna Bullock Reid, 90, of 647 Burchette Road, Manson, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center, Henderson.

She was born June 13, 1922, to the late Wheeler and Maggie Bullock. She joined Oak Level United Church of Christ at an early age. She was married to the late James Reid Sr.

Funeral services will be held today, at 1 p.m., at Oak Level United Church of Christ with Pastor Leon White officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include: one son James Reid Jr.; five daughters, Lucetta Henderson, Eller Bullock, Hattie Alexander, Maggie Durham and Betty Yancey, all of Manson; one sister, Eller Bullock of Henderson; one brother, Thomas Bullock of Manson; 40 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

The family is receiving friends at the residence.
