Albert G. Borden, Jr.

HENDERSON — Mr. Albert G. Borden Jr., 98, passed away at home on Friday, April 25, 2014, after a period of declining health.

Born in South Orange, N.J., October 16, 1915, he was the son of Albert G. Borden and Katharine S. Borden. He was the grandson of William Borden of Fall River, Mass., General Manager of the Fall River Steamship Line and several other industries as well as one of the founding members, in 1847, of the Borden Mining Company, Frostburg, Md.

He attended local schools until high school level when he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, N.H., graduating with the class of 1934. He later attended Williams College, Williamstown, Mass. and Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., where he was a member of Sigma Phi fraternity.

He served in the New Jersey National Guard, 102nd Calvary, for a number of years then enrolled in U.S. Naval Officers Training School in Chicago, Ill., graduating in March 1941 with the rank of Ensign, U.S.N.R. He served in the Atlantic Fleet destroyers for a period of five years through WWII, with a final post as Commanding Officer, Destroyer Escort USS Hill. He retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in October, 1975, with the rank of Commander.

He served as Personnel Manager of The Corbitt Company until it was sold in 1952. He owned and operated Electric Products Company in Henderson until 1966 when he joined Kwik Pik Markets, later Fast Fare Inc., as vice-president, retiring in December 1974. During this period he also served as president and treasurer of Borden Mining Company, Frostburg, Md., for 40 years, until 2005.

He was a long time member of The Church of the Holy Innocents, where he served for many years as treasurer, senior warden and member of the vestry, member of the choir and lay reader. He was also a member of the Henderson Rotary Club, serving as president one year; member and president of the Henderson Jaycees; member and former president, secretary and treasurer of the Henderson Country Club; Advisory Board Chairman of the Salvation Army; former local Director, Centura Bank; member and Secretary of Carolina Sailing Club; and member of the Endowment Fund Board of Directors, Vance-Granville Community College.

He enjoyed sailing, golf, skiing, and participated in all these sports for many years.

Mr. Borden was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Elizabeth T. Borden. Surviving are his daughters Emily Borden Ragsdale of Jamestown and Wilmington, Mary Borden Currin and husband Benjamin McNinch Currin of Raleigh; a son, John Crain Borden and wife Monica Patchell Borden of Raleigh; and four grandchildren, Thomas Albert Ragsdale, Katharine Coffin Ragsdale, Elizabeth Currin Houston and husband, Michael, and Ellen Corbitt Currin.

The family is grateful to Susie Fields, Ruby Venable, Cherita Hargrove, Elizabeth Whitley, Charlotte Harris and Angie Ellington for their devoted care for many years.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 28, at The Church of the Holy Innocents by the Rev. Donald A. Lowery, with reception following in the Parrish Hall.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home, 1930 Parker Lane.

Clyde S. Cates

WARRENTON — Clyde Spencer Cates, age 68, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center. He is preceded in death by his father, Carvie S. M. Cates, and his stepfather, Jessie B. Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Providence United Methodist Church by the Rev. Amanda Dixson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Spencer is survived by his mother, Marie D. Martin; his sister, Karen Horsemann; one niece; and one nephew. The family will receive friends at Providence UMC after the funeral service.
