Bernice B. Hobson

OXFORD — Bernice Ophelia Marable Bass Hobson was a cheerful lifelong survivor who loved being surrounded by family and friends. She had a capacious interest in people and cherished family gatherings.

After a fruitful life, at the age of 84, Mrs. Hobson departed this life on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Universal Healthcare in Oxford.

Born May 9, 1929, in Oxford, to Alexander and Ida Sanford Marable, Ophelia attended public schools in Oxford. Her first marriage was to Archie Bass. To this union two sons were born, and later she had a second marriage to Shepherd Bland Hobson. She enjoyed travel experiences with her husband, who served in many capacities in the U.S. Army.

Besides her two sons, James (Ida) and Marvin Bass (Gloria) of Durham, other survivors include one granddaughter, Tonya Colleena Bass of Durham; two grandsons, Timothy and Kevin Bass of Oxford; and a sister, Kate Marable of Henderson.

The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford on Saturday evening, April 26, between 7 and 8 p.m.

Services will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Hardie Grove Baptist Church on U.S. 15 North in Oxford.

Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home, 3724 Salem Road, Oxford, and Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens, 923B Old Fayetteville St., Durham.

 

Elnora P. Cunningham

NEW YORK — Elnora Person Cunningham, 84, formerly of Vance County, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Manhattan.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2014, in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.

The body will be on view Saturday two hours prior to the service.

HENDERSON — Joseph Emerson Henderson Sr., 86, of 50 Angels Drive, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Concord Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be today, April 25, from noon to 6 p.m. in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service.

WARRENTON — Emily Jones, 96, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

OXFORD — Joseph Toler Sr., 58, of 1047 Henry Huff Road, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Granville Medical Center.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Vernon Hill Baptist Church by Elder Hardee Green. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be Saturday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

OXFORD — Lynn “Trautman” Welsh, 63, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in a motor vehicle accident.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 28, in the chapel of Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford by the Rev. Brian Hager.

Visitation will be prior to the service Monday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home.

HENDERSON — Kathleen “Kat” Hargrove Wiggins, 52, of Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014.

A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Greater Refuge Church of our Lord Jesus Christ by Dr. Wesley Crews. Interment will follow in the Oak Level United Church of Christ cemetery.

Viewing will be Saturday, April 26, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and all other times at 149 Foster Road.
