Haywood L. Walker

HENDERSON — Haywood Lee Walker, 88, of 779 Parkway Drive, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Brian Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Durham.

Mr. Walker was born in Warren County on Oct. 9, 1925, to the late Haywood and Annie Bell Walker of Henderson.

He graduated from Henderson Institute, where he met his future wife, Mary Ella Williams. This blessed union, lasting 65 years, took place on Dec. 27, 1945.

Mr. Walker was a longtime member of St. Andrews Church of Christ, where he wore many hats, such as Sunday school teacher, superintendent, head of the trustee board, etc. He was also instrumental in building the church, using his expertise and hiring minimal labor to keep cost down. As a masonry contractor with as many as 80 employees, he built structures in Vance County and surrounding areas, including factories, hospitals, schools and homes. He joyfully served as a “Worshipful Master” of the Beacon Light Masonic Lodge.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at St. Andrews Christian Church, with interment to follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

The body will be on view from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today, Feb. 14, at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Walker leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Elaine Alston; a son, Eric (Ricky) Walker; a daughter-in-law, Ann Walker; a son-in-law, Dr. Johnny B. Alston; three grandsons, Christopher Walker (Ebony) and Dorian and Jarrett Alston; three great-grandchildren, Alana Alston and Xavier and Gabrielle Walker, all of Durham; one sister, Juanita Diggs of Henderson; three sisters-in-law, Doris Edmondson and Marguerite Rivera (Santiago) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joyce More (Henry) of Norfolk, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at the residence today, Feb. 14, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Elizabeth S. Davis

HENDERSON — Elizabeth Jane Smith Davis, 75, of 51 Raccoon Crossing, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born in Red Bank, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Claude Erwin and Hazel Sara LeComp Smith.

Mrs. Davis was a retired certified nurse’s assistant. She was a member of Belford United Methodist Church in Belford, N.J.

No services are currently planned.

Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Charles Thomas Davis; a daughter, Donna Lee Davis Sutter of Henderson; two sons, Glenn Alan Davis and wife Maureen of Toms River, N.J., and Charles E. Davis of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.; a sister, Ruth S. Greene of Leonardo, N.J.; a brother, Robert Smith of Leonardo, N.J.; six grandchildren, Jessica Morgan, Jason Morgan, Glenn Davis Jr., Cheryl Nicoletti, Amy Davis and Charles K. Davis; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home, 51 Raccoon Crossing, Henderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.

Edward Denson

HENDERSON — Edward Denson, 73, of 280 South Beckford Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in the chapel of Davis-Royster Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.

Viewing is today, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

WISE — Henry Hartwell Jones, 97, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at Locust Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Kenneth Alexander. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Johnnie B. Kingsberry

HENDERSON — Johnnie Bell Kingsberry, 86, of 1204 North Pinkston Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 15, at Sunset Gardens, weather permitting.

There will be no public viewing.

Lettie B. Palmer

WARRENTON — Lettie Brown Palmer, 89, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 14, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Macon by Rev. Charles Faulcon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be at the church for one hour prior to the service.
