Steven C. Tippens
BURLINGTON — Steven Craig Tippens, 59, of Burlington, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Cone Hospital, Greensboro.
He was born in Hampton, Va., and was a contractor with the U.S. government, working in locations overseas. He also was a disc jockey in Henderson and Greensboro.
Steven was preceded in death by his father, Norman Goff Tippens Sr.; and his faithful canine friend, “Geo.”
Steven is survived by two daughters, Kelly Stainback and her husband, Aaron, and Keisha Owens and her boyfriend, Ronnie Faucette, all of Henderson; brother, the Rev. Norman Tippens Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Rockbridge, Va.; sister, Margo Rawlings and her husband, Robin, of Littleton; grandchildren, Daniel Owens, Hannah Owens, Lillian Stainback, Addison Stainback, Ace Stainback and London Stainback; and five nieces and nephews.
Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service is taking care of arrangements where a memorial service will be held in their chapel at 4 p.m., Sunday, June 9, 2013, with the Rev. Tammy Ayscue officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Kelly and Aaron Stainback, 1751 Parker Lane, Henderson.

John L. Abbott Sr.
HENDERSON — John Lennie “Catfish John” Abbott Sr., 85 years old, went to his heavenly home after a long illness on Friday, June 7, 2013, at his home with a family member by his side.
Born in Vance County on Feb. 12, 1928, he was the son of the late Lennie H. Abbott and Manolia Stevenson Abbott.
John was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of Fork Hunting Club of Inez for many years. He loved deer, rabbit and squirrel hunting along with fishing and gardening.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 10, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Wood and Dr. Russell Bell. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Epsom.
He is survived by one daughter, Shelia A. Finch and husband, Crawford; two sons, Trenton Wade Abbott Sr. and wife, Carol, and John Lennie Abbott Jr., all of Henderson; one brother, Arvelle Abbott of Henderson and one sister, Ann Hawks of Warrenton; seven grandchildren, Jackie Ellington Jr. and Amy, Donna Parrish and husband, Chuck, Wade Abbott and wife, Melinda, Tara Norwood and husband, Kevin, Lance Abbott, Dustin Abbott and Hunter Abbott; 12 great-grandchildren, Kristi, Paige, Heather, Bryant, Bryce, Seth, Charli, Dylan, Isis, Rilynne, Autumn and Logan; two great-great-grandchildren, Ivan Gooch and Madison Parrish.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Wortman of Sun City, Fla.; and two brothers, James Arthur Abbott and Elmo Abbott of Henderson.
The family will receive family and friends Sunday, June 9, 2013, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Shelia and Crawford Finch at 111 Gillburg Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jackie Ellington Jr., Bryant Parrish, Ryan Smiley, Kevin Norwood, Dustin Abbott, Hunter Abbott, Billy Overton, C.T. Overton, Gary Pulley and Charles Jones.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, c/o Pat Wood, 722 U.S. 158 Bypass, Henderson, NC 27537.

HENDERSON — Olive May Powell Urquhart, 88, of 763 Franklin Lane, Henderson, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at Duke University Hospital in Durham.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
