Mary W. Johnson

HENDERSON — Mrs. Mary Watkins Johnson, age 85, a former resident of Garland Street, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at a local nursing home.

Born on Dec. 23, 1927, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Daniel Watkins and Leona Miller “Sis” Watkins. She was a homemaker, a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and member of the Ladies Group at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 29, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Johnny Yount. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by four daughters, Maria J. Ellis and husband, Bobby, Sherry J. Schuster and husband, Wade Jr., Ginger J. Pugh and husband, Marshall, and Joan J. Jenkins, all of Henderson; one son, Garland Curtis Johnson Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Oxford; a sister, Nancy Watkins Boyd of Pittsboro; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland C. Johnson Sr.; a son, Vance Wade Johnson Sr.; and two sisters, Helen Watkins and Betty Lou Stewart.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Friday, from 12:30-2 p.m., at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. At other times they will be at the home of Sherry and Wade Schuster, 3520 Vicksboro Road, Henderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, c/o Maria J. Ellis, 281 Garrett Rd., Henderson, NC 27537.

Serving as pall bearers will be Mrs. Johnson’s grandsons and great-grandsons, Robert Ellis, Jr., Randy Ellis, Vance Johnson Jr., Daniel Parrish, Brandon Williamson and Christopher Williamson.

WISE — Parrie Edward Alexander, 92, of 132 Parrie Road, Wise, died March 26, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center of Henderson.

Teresa Bullock

HENDERSON — Teresa Bullock, 45, of 729 Daniel St., Henderson, died March 25, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Born in Vance County, she was daughter of Jennie Mae Gregory Reynolds and Willard Moss Bullock. She graduated from Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, N.J., and joined Morning Star United Holy Church.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Guiding Star Holy Church by Pastor Shirley Piercy. Burial will follow at Morning Star United Holy Church Cemetery.

Survivors include: her husband, Dennis Bullock of the home; one daughter, Tyeresa Bullock of the home; one son, Dennis Bullock of Henderson; her mother, Jennie Reynolds of Henderson; her father, Willard Bullock of Decatur, Ga.; six sisters, Nickie Brown and Monica Marrow, both of Newark, N.J., Lafondra Marrow of Henderson, Tamika Bullock of Newport News, Va., Carolyn Moises of Newark, N.J., Kimberly Reynolds of Georgia; three brothers, Deon Marrow of Miss., Kermit Marrow of Castalia and Corey Reynolds of Silver Springs, Md.

HENDERSON — Alma Harris, 78, of Henderson, (formerly of Warren County) died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Henderson.

HENDERSON — Lucille T. Towns, 89, of 1409 Quail Run Trail, Henderson, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Kindred of Henderson.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Catherine “Cathy” Nell Thorpe, 65, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Va.

She was born to Eunice Mae McGhee and the late Frank McGhee in Oxford.

A Granville County native, Thorpe joined Hardie Grove Baptist Church in Oxford, and was a graduate of Mary Potter High School in Oxford.

She was employed with the Newport News Public Schools Transportation Department, Newport News, Va., until her health no longer permitted.

Survivors include: two sons, Thomas Bernard Thorpe and Shawn Nicholas Thorpe, both of Newport News, Va.; one daughter, Brittney LaKeasha of the home; mother, Eunice Mae McGhee of Oxford; three brothers, James Frank McGhee and Alvin Tommie McGhee, both of Oxford, and Ernest Crowder of Laurel, Md.; two sisters, Delores M. Chambers-Dupuy and Muriel L. McGhee both of Palm Coast, Fla.; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 30, 2013, at noon in the Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Michael Alston. Interment will follow in the White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

A viewing will take place Friday, March 29, 2013, from 4-7 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday, March 30, 2013, from 11 am.-2 p.m.
