John L. Capps
ARCOLA — Dr. John Lawton Capps, 53, of Gastonia, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at his home.
He was born on May 14, 1959, in Warrenton, the son of the late Amos Lee and Rebecca Davis Capps of Arcola.
John was a graduate of Warren Academy High School, received his bachelors degree from Wake Forest University and earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine. He served the Gaston County community for over 20 years in the practice of Internal Medicine, and more recently in Bariatric medicine in Rock Hill, S.C. John served on the board of Gaston County, the Department of Social Services and on the board of the House of Mercy in Belmont. John was a loving father, friend and cancer survivor.
Stan Patterson conducted a service to celebrate the life of Dr. Capps on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 6 p.m., in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. The family received friends following the service at the funeral home.
Dr. Capps was then taken back to his childhood home for a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Arcola, with interment following in the church cemetery.
Survivors of Dr. Capps include: his daughter, Samantha Lynn Capps of Belmont; son, Stewart Bailey Capps of Gastonia; partner, James Collins; mother of his children, Karen Lee Kickham of Gastonia; siblings and spouses, Weldon Clinton and wife, Betty Jean Capps and Sylvia Capps Greene, all of Arcola, Lester Davis and wife, Elke Capps of Warrenton, Amos Lee Capps Jr. of Arcola, Robin Wesley and wife, Frances Capps of Warrenton, and Lynn Capps Martin and husband, Michael, of Arcola; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Chip Capps, Timothy G. Capps, Davis Capps, Drew Capps, Matthew Martin, Wesley Martin, John Porter and Robert Porter.

HENDERSON — Curtis “Billy” McGhee died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at age 76.
He was born in Franklin County on Nov. 19, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie McGhee and Ruby Harris McGhee; and siblings, Bobby McGhee, Wallace McGhee, Mack McGhee, Danny McGhee, Betty M. Ray and Colleen Lithincum. He is survived by his wife, Pat Jones McGhee, whom he met in 1988; sister, Shirley Pendleton of Franklinton; and his brother, Pete McGhee, also of Franklinton. Also surviving Billy is his best friend, Walter Beckham, of Franklinton, who was Billy’s brother in spirit and deeds.
Billy attended school in Franklin and Nash counties. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and retired 20 years later in 1975. He traveled the world over and served during the Vietnam Conflict. Settling in his beloved Franklin County, which he considered the perfect place to live, after retirement from the service, Billy began a second career as a 911 dispatcher for the Town of Franklinton and then with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, where he retired in 1998.
Billy was a member of Liberty Christian Church, where he served as a member of the Men’s Fellowship, an usher and a deacon. Funeral services will be held today, at 3 p.m., at Liberty Christian Church. Burial will follow with Military Honors in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Marion Lark will conduct the services. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the services.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Tim Gilleland, Connie Mack McGhee, Tony Bailey, Jonathan Jones; and friends, Wesley Knott, Phil Grissom, Gary Lee Ayscue, Mike Ayscue and Charles Harrell.

D. Steven Hughes
HENDERSON — Dwight Steven Hughes, 60, of 1520 Peace St., Henderson, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at his home.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of Mary Helen Roberson of Henderson and the late William Harold “Billy” Hughes.
Mr. Hughes was the owner of D.S. Hughes Bonding Company, and was a former employee of J.P. Taylor Tobacco Company. He graduated from Henderson High School in 1971 and from East Carolina University in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree in business education. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held today, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. John Check.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 30 years, Kathy Hedgepeth Hughes; two daughters, Katie Hughes Pickler and husband, Matt, of Charlotte, and Kelly Clair Hughes of the home; two sisters, Wanda Hughes Kinlaw and husband, John, of Shallotte, and Yvonne Roberson Pegram and husband, H.M., of Henderson; a sister-in-law, Beverly H. Kennedy and husband, Steve, of Henderson; a brother-in-law, Gerry C. Hedgepeth and wife, Kimberly, of Henderson; four nieces; and four nephews.
The family will receive friends today, from 10-11 a.m., in the parlor at First United Methodist Church. All other times, they will be at the home, 1520 Peace St., Henderson. Roger M. Edwards
HENDERSON — Roger Michael “Mike” Edwards, 62, of 7314 Canal St., Willard, Md., died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Md.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late Roger Vincent Edwards and Betty Louise Ayscue Edwards Kilham.
A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, March 22, 2013, at 11 a.m., at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Timothy J. Burgess.
Mike is survived by a brother, Larry Vincent Edwards. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Lorraine Edwards Thomas.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.

Mackerlean F. Morris
KITTRELL — Mackerlean Taylor Floyd Morris, 86, of 130 Taylor Lane, Kittrell, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Vance County, to the late Redden Clark and Connie Perry Taylor.
She was educated in the Vance County Schools and joined Shiloh Baptist Church at an early age. Later she moved to New York where she worked at Clark and O’Neil Mail Order Company, and attended Meek Baptist Church in Harlem, N.Y., serving as director of the mass choir, youth choir and founder of the Community Choir of New York City.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Kittrell, by the Rev. Spencer Davis. Burial will follow in the Taylor Family Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Beatrice F. Spencer of Valley Stream, N.Y.; one sister, Essie Mae Cheatham of Kittrell; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Viewing will take place today, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service,
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 130 Taylor Lane, Kittrell.

Lisa B. Wiggins
VANCE COUNTY — Lisa Blackwell Wiggins, 47, a Vance County native, died Tuesday March 12, 2013, at her residence in Glean Burnie, Md.
She was born in Vance County, on April 6, 1965, to the late Oscar M. Blackwell and Nathaniel Blackwell Sr.
She joined Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age and was educated in the Vance County School System. She then furthered her education by attending Fayetteville State University. Her employment included a store manager for BP and Rose Oil Company, a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines and Capitol Entertainment Tours and later, supervisor of Transportation for Bowie State University.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 1 p.m., at United Greater Faith Ministries, with Bishop Garland Heggie officiating. Interment will follow in Blacknall Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, John W. Wiggins; a daughter, Tiffany Burwell; six grandchildren; and a brother, William A. Blackwell.
A viewing will take place today, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Tiffany Burwell, 245 Truman Ave., Henderson.
