Sallie W. Dew

STANHOPE — Sallie Wilson Dew, age 83, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 2 p.m., in Stanhope Baptist Church with the Rev. Rachel Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Bailey Town Cemetery.

Sallie was born in Henderson, one of two daughters. Born to the late Leroy and Lillian Wilson, she grew up on a working tobacco farm and graduated from Dabney High School in 1947, where, with the addition of a 12th grade, she was a senior twice. She attended East Carolina Teachers College. Her first teaching assignment was Mount Pleasant where she was introduced to Billy Dew by his aunt, Sula Bissette, while she was living at the teacherage. She married Billy on Dec. 9, 1953. She taught for 36 years in Nash County; Stanhope, Ferrells, Spring Hope, Bailey and Middlesex. She lost the love of her life, Billy Dew, in 1989.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Jane Bryant and husband, Larry Jan, of Spring Hope; Judy Dew and husband, Brad Allen, of Durham; sister, Rose Wade of Knightdale; and two grandsons. Randall and Larry Bryant.

The family will receive friends at Spring Hope Funeral Home today from 6-8 p.m.

Alline H. Owen

ANGIER — Alline Howell Owen, a 65-year-native of Broad Street, Angier, in front of the water tank, died at the age of 96 on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012.

She was the widow of Fred Madison Owen who died in 1979. She and Fred loved calling Angier home with their wonderful friends. They were members of Angier Baptist Church. Alline graduated from Lafayette High School and Red Purcell School of Cosmetology. She was awarded Yard of the Month twice by the Ambassador Homemakers Extension Club of Angier. Alline always displayed, and was a good example of, sensible frugality learned during the Great Depression and World War II, in which Fred served.

She is survived by her daughter, Joan O. Wortham and husband, Larry, of Fuquay-Varina and her son, W. Frederick Owen and wife, Diane, of Oxford; grandchildren, Jennifer Wortham Will and husband, Joel, of Apex, William Fredrick Owen Jr. of Raleigh, and Marshall Owen Wortham of Fuquay-Varina; and one great-grandson, Thomas Emerson Will.

Alline was the seventh of nine children of W. D. and Nottie Howell born on May 3, 1916, and raised in the Baptist Grove Community, Fuquay. The third child of Fred and Alline, Timothy Wayne Owen, died an infant in 1958.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 3 p.m., at the Thomas Funeral Home Chapel, 401 N. Ennis St., Fuquay-Varina. A private burial will be held Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

James A. “Neet” Dent

VANCE COUNTY — Brother James A. “Neet” Dent died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012.

The son of Daniel “Beb” and Mary Howard Dent, he was born Jan. 22, 1936, in Vance County. He joined Red Bud Baptist Church as an adolescent. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1964, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He served as a military police officer and marksman, retiring in April of 1967. He spent time in Korea and before returning home to Henderson.

During his retirement years, Dent spent his time taking occasional car rides, viewing evangelistic television, and studying both the Old and New Testaments. He remained a fixture of Julia Avenue all of his adult life.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 1 p.m., at Red Bud Baptist Church with the Rev. John Silver presiding and a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Willie Ramely, and interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites.

Viewing will take place today, from 2-7 p.m., at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Chapel. Floralbearers and pallbearers will be family friends.

Johnnie Hargrove Jr.

HENDERSON — Johnnie Hargrove Jr., 40, of 377 Peter Stallings Road in Warrenton, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton. The Rev. Kathard Marks will officiate and burial will follow in the Alston Family Cemetery in Warrenton.

Survivors include his father, Johnnie Hargrove Sr., of the home; three sisters, Christine Jiggetts of Butner, Shirley Alston of Warrenton and Adlean Henderson of the home; one brother, Willie Jiggetts of Louisburg; and a grandmother.
The body will be on view Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Professional services have been entrusted to Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

David L. Harris

OXFORD — David Lee Harris, 58, a resident of 921-A Goshen St., Oxford, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Granville Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in the Betts and Son Funeral Home Chapel with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Kenny Hester. Interment will follow in the Meadowview Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2012, at the funeral home, and other times at the residence and at 105-B Griffin St., Oxford.

Gladys L. Jones

VANCE COUNTY — Gladys Louise Jones, 87, a resident of Kerr Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center died, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012.

She was born in Vance County, July 4, 1925, to the late Horace Jones and Alice Hunt Jones. She was educated in Vance County Public Schools and was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church with Elder Richard Batts officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Survivors include: five children, Louise Jones of Henderson, Scarlie Harrington of Norlina, Arthur Cooper of New Jersey, William T. Henderson of Suitland, Md., and Ernest Jones of Henderson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held today, from noon-5:30 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Louise Jones, 1465 Newton Dairy Road, Lot 1, Henderson.

Crawford S. Wilson

HENDERSON — Crawford Sidney Wilson, 77, of 755 Southerland Mill Road, Henderson, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Albert Sidney Wilson and Thelma Grace Pendleton.

Wilson was a former electrician at Harriet & Henderson Yarns. An avid deer hunter, known as “Mountaineer,” he was a member of Vicksboro Hunting Club.
A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at 4 p.m., at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklinton, conducted by Harvey Harris.

Surviving are four daughters, Sheila W. Winn of Epsom, Kathryn W. Pendergrass and Lisa W. Lawson, both of Henderson, and Brenda W. Leonard of Warrenton; two sisters, Mae W. Wheeler of Franklinton and Alice W. Smith of Clayton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Crawford S. Wilson Jr.; a sister, Lettie W. Hayes; and three brothers, Albert Wilson, Charles Wilson and Douglas Wilson.

The family will receive friends today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.

Mary L. Wimbish

BULLOCK — Mary Lou Wimbish, 79, a resident of 9043 McDuffie Road, Bullock, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at her home.

Mary Lou received her education in the Granville County School System and retired from J.P. Taylor Company.

She was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Ralph Wimbish of Monroe, La.; Franklin Wimbish of Bullock; Clifton Wimbish of Durham; and one daughter, Karen Wimbish Reid of Durham; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther C. Lamb of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph Glover of Henderson and Alfred Glover of Townsville.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Philadelphia Baptist Church with a eulogy delivered by the Rev. Waverly Mills. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

A viewing will take place Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family is receiving friends at the residence.
