Helene G. Speed

OXFORD — Helene Gilbert Speed, age 87, of Oxford, died at Granville Medical Center on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Franklin and Addie Stepp Gilbert and the wife of the late John William Speed. She was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at the county museum.

Graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m., in Elmwood Cemetery by the Rev. David Haley. The family will receive friends, from 9:45-10:45 a.m., prior to the service at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home.

Surviving are a son, John W. Speed II of Henderson; a sister-in-law, Margaret H. Gilbert of Charlotte; and a granddaughter, Ashley Speed of Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Perry T. Faulkner

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Perry Thomas Faulkner, 82, husband to Madeline Rhodes Faulkner, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012.
Born on Oct. 18, 1930, in Vance County, he was the son of the late Ernest Eugene “Genie” Faulkner and Sudie Faulkner Faulkner. He attended Henderson City Schools and was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving from 1951-1955 in the Korean War. He was a retired security officer at First American Bank.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at 2 p.m., in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Tim Burgess.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Thurston Faulkner of Beltsville, Md.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at Jefferson Funeral Chapel (jeffersonfuneral.com), 5755 Castlewellan Drive, Alexandria, Va., and immediately following the graveside service at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, 1699 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, NC 27537.

Frankie C. Kearney

HENDERSON — Frankie Champion Kearney, 86, a resident of Senior Citizens Home in Henderson died, Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. She was born in Vance County, on Feb. 17, 1926, to the late Brewster Jones and Katie Dunston Jones.
She was educated in Vance County Schools.

She was employed with the former Americal Corporation for more than 25 years.

She joined Jones Chapel Baptist Church at an early age and was the church treasurer for many years, as well as being a member of the senior choir and kitchen committee.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Jones Chapel Baptist Church with Pastor Anthony Q. Alston Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one sister, Dorothy R. Goode of Henderson.

Viewing will be held today, from noon-6 p.m., at the funeral home and at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Dorothy Goode, 444 Sunnyview Road, Henderson.

HENDERSON — Henrietta Macon, 35, of 38 Coyote Court, Henderson, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Maria Parham Medical Center in Henderson.

Bryant L. Minor

BUTNER — Bryant Lee Minor, 81, a longtime resident of Granville County, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at his home.
A native of Granville County, he was the son of the late Henry Hunt and Nellie B. Freeman Minor. He was a member of Butner First Baptist Church and a retired traffic manager after 40 years of service with Mt. Hope Finishing Company in Butner.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 2 p.m., at Butner First Baptist Church by the Rev. Lenny Rogers and Rev. Mack Thompson. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Virginia Little Minor of the home; a daughter, Donna M. Brinkley of Durham; two sons, Larry B. Minor of Butner and Tim Minor of Raleigh; a brother, Al Minor of Creedmoor; one granddaughter, five grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Alma Brown Minor; a sister, Kay Ellis; and a brother, Jimmy Minor.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Butner First Baptist Church.

Visitation will take place today, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Butner First Baptist Church in Butner and other times at the home.

Shirley M. Shaw

VANCE COUNTY — Shirley Miles Shaw, 58, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at her home.

Born on March 29, 1954, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Lafayette Miles Sr. and Cora Glover Miles.

After obtaining her GED, she attended Vance-Granville Community College, earning a license of cosmetology. She worked as manager of Super Cuts in Durham, as well as Chapel Hill, until her health declined. Afterward, she spent her time caring for her children and grandchildren.

Shaw was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include: her children, Tanya Miles-Holden of Oxford, Alonzo B. Branch Jr. and Mary D. Branch, both of Durham; Jason L. Brown and Kenneth R. Brown, both of the home; eight siblings, Delois Blacknall of Kittrell, Lafayette Miles Jr., Norman Miles, Karen Waverly, Vernon Miles and Sheila Miles, all of Henderson, Larry D. Miles Sr. of South Carolina and Barbara Hargrove of Warrenton; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 1 p.m., at Progressive Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 735 East Rock Spring St., Henderson, with a eulogy delivered by Pastor John Miles Jr.

A viewing will take place today, from 3-6 p.m., at Garnes & Toney Funeral Home, 806 E. Andrews Ave., Henderson.

Essie P. Smith

OXFORD — Essie Pearl Smith, 87, a resident of 104 Palmer Court, Oxford, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at her home.
She was a former employee of JFD Electronics and Vance-Granville Community College, and was a member of Hardie Grove Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

Survivors include: four sons, Herman Cozart of Oxford, Bobby Ray Smith of Durham, Dwight Smith of Belgium and Elvis Smith of Chapel Hill; eight daughters, Doris Ingram and Bettie Nelson, both of Durham, Paulette Harris, Malinda Davis, Barbara Smith, Yvonne Fuller and Patricia Smith, all of Oxford, and Janet Lassiter of Franklinton; 37 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Hardie Grove Baptist Church. (The time of the service will be announced at a later date.) Interment will follow in the Whetstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

A viewing will take place Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends Saturday, from 7-8 p.m., at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
