Barbara W. Hagwood

HENDERSON — Barbara Williams Hagwood, 66, of 420 Daniel Boone Trail, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Born in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Drewry Hartwell Williams and Graycie Grant Williams.

Mrs. Hagwood was a retired school bus driver for the West Ottawa, Mich., Public Schools.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Surviving are her husband, James Spurgeon Hagwood; a daughter, Nancy Rae Roberts-Ring and husband Michael of Henderson; a sister, Drewlene W. Gold of Charlotte; a brother, Ted A. Williams of Raleigh; and two grandchildren, Alexandrea Roberts and Andrew Roberts.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4701 Hedgemore Drive, Suite 810, Charlotte, NC 28209-2280.

Eugene R. Holland

HENDERSON — Eugene Ray Holland, age 86, a resident of Deer Crossing Court, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at Trinity Place Nursing Home in Albemarle.

Born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Edgecombe County, he was the son of the late Archibald Staton Holland and Lucy Smith Holland.

Eugene was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, of which he was most proud. He was a retired cable foreman for the former Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co. and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he served as treasurer, junior warden, senior warden and vestry member.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 1, at 1 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church by Rev. Donald A. Lowery. Burial will follow in Norwood.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rawls Holland of the home and Norwood; one daughter, Gene Holland Hinson and husband Don; two grandchildren, Matthew Gene Hinson and wife Lisa and Elizabeth Faye Hinson and fiance Kyle Pope; one nephew, David Pulley; and special family member Julie Breedlove Kelly and husband Kevin and their children, Colin and Jennifer.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Holland Pulley and Patricia Ann Holland; and one brother, Charles Edward Holland.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Parish House at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leigh Ann Edwards, c/o St. John’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 974, Henderson, NC 27536.

Carol M. Faulkner

HENDERSON — Carol Mulchi Faulkner, 58, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Maria Parham Medical Center.

Born in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Herman Ray Mulchi and Geneva Weaver Mulchi.

Mrs. Faulkner was a former employee of Americal Inc. She attended Joy in the Lord Baptist Church.

No service is currently planned.

Surviving are her husband, William Irvin Faulkner Sr.; three sons, Anthony E. Faulkner of the home, William I. Faulkner Jr. of Henderson and Robert W. Faulkner of Oxford; a sister, Brenda M. Hatcher of California; three brothers, James Larry Mulchi of Paris, Calif., Linwood Mulchi of Raleigh and Jerry Mulchi of Henderson; a half-brother, Paul Gibson of Henderson; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Mulchi; and a brother, Roger Mulchi.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.

Marie B. Roberson

HENDERSON — Marie Briggs Roberson, age 83, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on July 1, 1930, in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late John Wester Briggs and Mamie Bobbitt Briggs and was the widow of former police chief Kenneth Knight Roberson.

She was a retired hairdresser and was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be held today, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Dale Roberson.

She is survived by one daughter, Claudia R. Hunt and husband Billy of Henderson; one grandson, Kenneth G. Hunt of Flagstaff, Ariz.; one great-grandson, Andrew Duffee and wife Julie of Mill Spring; one great-great-granddaughter, Luna Rose Dufee; and her twin sister, Maria Briggs Roberson of Henderson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who loved her and assisted in her care and she loved them dearly in return. She also loved her in-laws as much. They were always important to her as well.

The family received friends at the home of Claudia and Billy Hunt, 1736 Ruin Creek Road, on Monday, Dec. 30, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Special thanks to Community Home Care and Hospice and to her two angels, Pat Cates and Debbie Gourley, who really made her final days much better.

OXFORD — Dorothy “Pete” Hester, 95, of 2075 Enon Road, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Universal Health Care.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, in the chapel of Allen’s Home of Funerals by Rev. Ray A. Allsberry, Minister Persaline Satterwhite, Rev. James Hester and Rev. Kenneth Hester. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Church Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Allen’s Home of Funerals.

 

 

Beatrice H. Higgs

RALEIGH — Beatrice Katherine Hicks Higgs, 87, of 11116 Crestmont Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at her residence.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 31, at Freedom Life Church of God. Interment will follow at Blacknall Cemetery.

Viewing is today at the church for one hour prior to the service.

NORLINA — Edward Wright, 79, of 118 Countryside Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at his residence.
