Kelby Lewis

MORRISVILLE — On Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, God’s will was done and Kelby Lewis peacefully entered into eternal rest.

He was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Feb. 11, 1969, to Cassie Ray Robinson Lewis and the late Willie Alfred Lewis Jr.

At an early age he joined Holy Temple Church, where he served on the usher board and was a member of the choir. He was a graduate of Vance Senior High, class of 1988, and was well known for his athletic achievements. He obtained a basketball scholarship to South University of Savannah, Ga. He was employed at Saint Gobain Containers for 16 years until he retired due to declining health.

Kelby was a fun-loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was well known for his wit, humor and vibrant personality. Even during his illness, when people would come to encourage, they instead left feeling inspired and uplifted by him. Kelby had unwavering faith. In the midst of all the pain and all the suffering he found solace in God’s love and grace.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Alfred Lewis Jr., and father-in-law, James A. Perry.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and supportive wife, Tonia Perry Lewis; three daughters, Shantwon Perry, Meshan Lewis and Kelbi Lewis; three granddaughters, Tamya, Miyani and Taylor; two brothers, Troy A. Lewis Sr. (Kim) and Kenneth Lewis of Henderson; two sisters, Lorell Lewis and Tandra Lewis of Louisburg; mother-in-law, Mildred Perry Fuller (James) of Henderson; one brother-in-law, Randy Perry (Linda) of Henderson; three sisters-in-law, Deborah Perry, Catherine Dunston (Tony) and Sylvia Smith (James) of Henderson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Mary J. Mabe

CANDLER — Mary Elisabet Jensen Mabe died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Patricia Mabe-Parker, in Candler. She was 93.

Mary was born May 27, 1920, in Tama County, Iowa, to Ane Kirstine Andersen and Gustav V. Jensen, the youngest of four children.

She grew up in High Point and graduated from Central High School. In 1942, she married John Ivan Mabe of Guilford County. He was an executive with Roses Stores, Inc., and she and John lived in Williamsburg, Va., New Bern, Bristol, Va., Norfolk, Va., and Charlotte before moving to Henderson in 1961. She moved to Asheville in 2006 to be near family.

Widowed in 1967, Mary dedicated herself to rearing her four children and giving back to her community. She became branch coordinator of the American Red Cross in Vance County, a position she held for more than 20 years. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson, where she taught Sunday school, worked with Area Churches Together in Service (ACTS), served on the administrative board, was a circle member and for many years was costume mistress of the living nativity.

Mary was a Girl Scouts leader, a member of the Sorosis Club and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed going to the beach and in 1996 traveled to visit relatives in her parents’ native Denmark. Her house in the Grove on South William Street in Henderson was a center of love and untold special projects involving her four children, eight grandchildren, extended family and friends over the years.

Mary had a sense of grace, a bright wit and endless compassion for everyone from all walks of life. She was always thinking of others before herself and wanted to assure others’ comfort over hers until the very end.

Mary is survived by her children, Barbara Macon of Cullowhee, Betty Pearson and husband Curtis of Atlantic Beach, John Ivan Mabe Jr. and wife Walker of Raleigh and Patricia Mabe-Parker of Candler; grandchildren, Lisa Macon Harrison (Mrs. Michael) of Wake Forest, Ben Macon and wife Chelley of West Point, N.Y., Harry Pearson of Wilmington, Laura Pearson of Charlotte, Jensen Mabe of Raleigh, Kate Temple-Mabe (Mrs. Andrew) of London, U.K., Charlotte Mabe of New York City and Hannah Parker Redmon (Mrs. Adam) of Waynesville; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors in the church parlor beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Pallbearers are David Michael Harrison Jr., Bennett Alston Macon III, Harry Stern Pearson, Adam Douglas Redmon, Jesus Ortiz and Henry A. Ross Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Vance County Red Cross, 300 S. Garnett St., Suite B, Henderson NC 27536, or First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, NC 27536.

Judith A. Buzzell

NORLINA — Judith Ann Buzzell, age 69, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at her home.

Judith was born in Chelsea, Mass.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Murray Gallagher, and her great-grandson, Jayden Stokes.

Mrs. Buzzell worked at BAMSI Mental Health in Brockton, Mass., until she moved to North Carolina five years ago.

Memorial Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 5:30 p.m., one hour prior to the service.

Judith is survived by two daughters, Alisa Gorman of Henderson and Ellen Paynter and husband Randy of Norlina; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a lifelong friend, Cheryl Battles.

Emma E. Harris

RALEIGH — Emma Edwards Harris, 86, of 4519 Lattimer Road, formerly of Henderson, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Litchford Falls Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Ricky and Martha Card Edwards. She was the widow of Ralph Fleming “Buddy” Harris.

Mrs. Harris was a retired employee of Harriet & Henderson Yarns Inc. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Dr. Gene Wood. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy H. Owenby of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Susan Owenby of Morrisville and Herb P. “Bunk” Owenby III of Raleigh; and one great-granddaughter, Emily L. Boggs of Morrisville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Rowena E. Barker, Arlene E. Edwards, Sue E. Faulkner, Anne Lou E. England and Virginia E. Fisher; and a brother, Charles Bennett Edwards.

The family will receive friends today, Dec. 17, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Waverly Saunders, Willie Adcock, Edd Stamper, Charles Ayscue, Eddie Ezell, Bobby Roberson and Mack Boyd.
