Ann W. Mayo

MOUNT OLIVE — Ann Marie Weldon Mayo, 84, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 22, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A native of Vance County and the daughter of the late James Dewey Weldon and Lottie Josephine Smith Weldon, and the widow of James Harold Mayo Sr., she was a ham radio operator, and she and her husband were owners and operators of WDJS Radio in Mount Olive.

A licensed certified public accountant, she was a member of the Southern Wayne Business and Professional Women’s organization, the Mount Olive Lion’s Club ladies auxiliary, the Mount Olive ECA and was a long-time student of the local arts and painting classes held in Mount Olive.

She had earned two master’s degrees and was a frequent diner at Southern Belle Restaurant in Mount Olive. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church of Dudley.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Greg Southerland and wife Rita of Virginia and James H. “Jimmy” Mayo Jr. of the home; four daughters, Theresa Mae Daves and husband Larry of Ellenwood, Ga., Ann Marie Gregory and husband Carroll “C” Gregory of Goldsboro, Nancy West and husband David West of Dudley and Joyce Beavers and husband Thomas Beavers of Seven Springs; a sister, Jean P. Weldon Ayscue of Henderson; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

She was also the mother of the late William Dewey Mayo.

The family extends a special thanks to Melinda Flores for her excellence in caring for Mrs. Mayo during her latter days of declining health.

Services to remember Mrs. Mayo will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with burial following in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home during the hour before the service and at other times at the home of Joyce and Tommy Beavers, 2169 Pineview Cemetery Road, Seven Springs.

Philip T. Johnston

JEFFERSON, Ga. — Philip Tyrone Johnston, 72, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.

He was born in Henderson, N.C., on Jan. 28, 1941, and was the son of the late Hugh Edward (Bill) Johnston and Viola Robinson Johnston.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jana Johnston Young.

He is survived by two sons, Philip Tyrone (Pete) Johnston and wife Tina of Jefferson and Larry Mitchell Johnston and wife Robyn of Montgomery, Ala.; a brother, Calvin Johnston; two sisters, Deborah J. Brewer and Beth J. Crowder, both of Henderson; four grandchildren, Ty and Nathan Johnston of Jefferson and Garrison and Jackson Johnston of Montgomery, Ala.; many nieces and nephews; and his long-time sweetheart, Ginger Baker of Henderson.

For most of his life, Phil was in the shoe business. After retirement, he moved to Atlanta to be near his children and was the “house father” for a halfway house for recovering addicts, which was sponsored by his church. Phil was able to lead many men to Jesus through that ministry.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Snellville Church of Christ. A memorial service will also be held at South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church in Henderson, N.C, on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m.

William R. Dickerson

HENDERSON — William Reaves “Bill” Dickerson, age 82, a resident of 118 Cherry Street, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, in a local nursing home.

Born on Nov. 30, 1931, in Granville County, he was the son of the late John Thomas Dickerson and Fannie Faucette Dickerson.

He was a retired owner and operator of Bill’s Exxon and Chestnut Shell and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Wilton.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Williamson Dickerson of the home; one daughter, Wanda D. Tart of Henderson; one son, Wayne Lindsey Dickerson of Henderson; five sisters, Betty Sue Crews of Oxford, Edna Barber of Goldston, Jenny Russell of Creedmoor, Jane Bridges of Franklinton and Maryanna Odom of Siler City; two brothers, Thomas Dickerson of Sanford and Tony Dickerson of Franklinton; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Walter L. Dickerson; and one sister, Thelma Yow.

The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home, at 118 Cherry Street.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Michael Tart, Barry Tart, Nicholas Tart, Neil Crews, James Ball and Jim Myers.
