Jessie C. Hicks
GREENSBORO — Jessie Carroll Hicks, 88, went home to be the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014. She was under the loving care of Hospice of Greensboro, Beacon Place.
An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, at Blaylock Funeral Home, 203 N. Front St., Warrenton, NC, 27589. Interment will follow at Warren Plains Memorial Gardens.
Jessie was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Warrenton to Levi and Mary Carroll. She was married Dec. 17, 1943, to the late Arthur N. Hicks. They were happily married for 67 years. Jessie retired from Guilford County Schools. She was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist in McLeansville, N.C., and loved her church very much. In addition, she was a master seamstress, enjoyed many different crafts and had made numerous quilts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as a son, Samuel Hicks.
Survivors include her daughter, Janyce Hicks Kivett (James); grandchildren, Sam and Walter Hicks, Phil (Kristi) and Mandy Kivett and Jenny Hicks Fisher; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
She was from a very large family of 21 brothers and sisters. Of those, she is survived by brothers Rooker and Milton Carroll and a sister, Becky Carroll Pryor.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel.

James J. Thomas
OXFORD — James Joseph Thomas, age 71, a resident of 1740 Burnside Road, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
Born in Mitchell County on March 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Jeter James Thomas and June Gouge Thomas.
James was a retired supervisor for S.T. Wooten. After retiring, he started Thomas and Sons Concrete Inc., where he worked with his sons until he retired. He was a member of Tungsten Baptist Church but attended Island Creek Baptist Church.
He was a founding member of the Twelve Point Hunting Club. In his youth, he played semi-pro baseball and later in life enjoyed watching his grandchildren and other children play baseball. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed playing golf, hunting and fishing.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Marshall Neathery and Albert Capps.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Norwood Thomas of the home; three sons, James Michael Thomas of Oxford and Chad Ray Thomas and Brad Jay Thomas and wife Kathy of Henderson; two brothers, Jerry Dean Thomas and Jessie Lee Thomas of Oxford; and eight grandchildren, Dustin Thomas, Dillon Thomas, Asa Thomas, Erin Thomas, Seth Thomas, Avery Thomas, Eli Thomas and Raylan Thomas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Robin Thomas.
The family will receive friends tonight, Aug. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home at 1740 Burnside Road.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Gene Arthur Vaughan, P.G. Vaughan, Brent Edwards, Dan Patterson, and Bobby Norwood, all members of the Twelve Point Hunting Club and the Townsville High School Class of 1961.

Walter H. Holden
SOUTH HILL, Va. — Walter Henry Holden, 52, of South Hill, Virginia, departed this life Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at his home.
He was the son of the late Samuel and Rosa Bell Pugh Holden.
He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife, Felicia Hayes Holden; a son and daughter, Corey L. Holden and Tyesha Cheek, both of Henderson; two grandchildren, Kanye Holden and Madison Cheek; three brothers, Joseph Southern (Caroline), William Holden and Samuel Holden, all of Henderson; five sisters, Lillie Ann Allen (Collins) of Bronx, New York, Annie Hicks (Phillip) of Norlina and Shirley Holden, Jeanette Hayes and Kattie Balthrope (George), all of Henderson; his godmother, Inell Parker of South Hill, Virginia; and a host of other relatives and friends, including two special nephews, Christopher Holden and Larry Russell Jr., and Jeffrey Fox (U.S. Marine Corps), whom he mentored like a son.
He was preceded in death by one niece, Meka Hayes.
Services will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at the RZUA Headquarters and Conference Center, La Crosse, Virginia.
Viewing will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

OXFORD — Anna Estelle Kinton, 90, of 110 Jones St., died Friday August 8, 2014.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Betts and Son Funeral Home by Dr. Aldolphus Smith and Bishop James Daniel. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at the home.
Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Aug. 12, at the funeral home.

HENDERSON — Michael Ray Ligon, 64, of 411 S. Lynnbank Road, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Raleigh Road Baptist Church by Dr. Larry Purcell.
