OXFORD — Gate Precast Company is looking SHARP.

In March, North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry presented Gate Precast the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, more commonly known as SHARP, award in recognition of the company’s efforts to protect employee’s well-being.

But such recognition doesn’t happen overnight.

“We started the process in 2010,” said Troy O’Donnell, safety manager at the facility.

After participating in the state occupational safety program, the company applied to N.C. Department of Labor, which conducted a review at the site.

“They do a full-blown safety audit of your program,” O’Donnell said. “You have to be 50 percent below the industry average in injury and illness rates.”

Gate Precast was certified as a SHARP company in August 2012.

In order to maintain SHARP certification, Gate Precast submitted a request to the labor department for recertification, which was awarded in October 2013 following another review.

“The guys really worked hard for this award,” he said. “We also had dedication from upper management.”

SHARP is designed to honor small to mid-size businesses for developing and maintaining effective safety programs for their workers. To qualify, the company’s injury and illness rates for the site must be below the national average for the industry, the employer must have an active safety committee, and state labor department safety and health consultants must complete an assessment of the workplace.

Gate Precast Company is the only business in Granville County to achieve SHARP recognition.

Plant Manager David Owen complimented the company’s employees for their dedication in achieving SHARP status.

Gate Precast Company is a subsidiary of Gate Petroleum Company of Jacksonville, Fla. It has eight manufacturing facilities located throughout the Southeast.

Gate Precast began operations in Oxford in 1995. It produces both architectural precast and pre-stressed hollow core slabs and employs 145 team members.
