Teen's death: Police make additional arrest
Police have made a second arrest in the Thursday homicide of a Henderson teenager, this one for intimidating a witness.
Corey Cheek Jr., a 17-year-old of 315 Davis Street in Henderson, was arrested Friday night. He faces the charge of intimidating a witness, with relation to the shooting death of 17-year-old Ja’quon Seward. Cheek received a $10,000 secured bond.
Lt. Christopher Ball said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Seward, of 710 Southerland Street, was found with gunshot wounds at the corner of Nicholas and Davis streets about 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. He was taken to Maria Parham Medical Center, where police say he was pronounced dead.
Less than 11 hours later, police arrested Daquan Ortiz, 20, of Henderson and charged him with voluntary manslaughter. Ortiz made his first court appearance Friday morning, and Vance County District Court Judge John Davis set a $1 million bond.
Families of both Seward and Ortiz were in the courtroom, and their mothers pledged to work together to bring others involved to justice.
“He didn’t mean to do that to my baby,” Kisha Eaton, Seward’s mother, said Friday. “It is just another senseless killing. It just needs to stop.”
“I want those other boys captured,” Gloria Ortiz said Friday. She’s the mother of Ja’quon Seward. “My son was defending himself. I was with him, beside him when the shooting started, and he was defending me.”
