Henderson police make arrest connected to Thursday murder
Less than 11 hours after the shooting death of a Henderson 17-year-old, Henderson police have a man in jail awaiting a first court appearance Friday morning.
Daquan Ortiz, 20, of Henderson is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Ja’quon Ty’ree Seward. Ortiz did not receive a bond, pending his appearance in Vance County District Court this morning.
Seward, of 710 Southerland Street, was found with gunshot wounds at the corner of Nicholas and Davis streets about 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. He was taken to Maria Parham Medical Center, where police say he was pronounced dead.
About 50 people gathered in the area after the shooting, reporting hearing 10 to 20 gunshots.
According to Dispatch archives, three citations or arrests since 2010 have been made of Ortiz. He was arrested March 28, 2012, and charged with possession of Schedule VI narcotics; he cited June 12, 2010, and charged with misdemeanor possession of spirituous liquor under age; and he was arrested March 24, 2010, and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
