Henderson police put a fifth suspect behind bars in teen's murder case
Corey Cheek Jr., the 17-year-old wanted in connection to the murder of Ja'Quon Ty'Ree Seward, is in the Vance County Jail.
Cheek turned himself in Thursday evening, according to Lt. Christopher Ball of the Henderson Police Department.
Cheek faces charges of first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm in the city, felony inciting a riot and felony street gang activity.
Cheek was not given bond.
His arrest brings to five the total number of people apprehended in connection to the death of Seward.
Seward was found on Feb. 21 at the corner of Nicholas and Davis streets about 1 p.m., about four blocks from his home. He was taken to Maria Parham Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
On Wednesday, police said they were searching for Cheek, Gary Treshon Holden and Ramek Holden. Gary Holden and Ramek Holden turned themselves in Thursday morning.
Each of the three are facing the same charges at Cheek.
Also Wednesday, police said they had arrested a 14-year-old juvenile. He, too, is facing a first-degree murder charge, and charges for discharging a firearm in the city and two felony charges for riot and gang activity.
Daquan Ortiz was arrested the day of the homicide, within 11 hours of the shooting, charged with voluntary manslaughter. A certified indictment by the Vance County Superior Court grand jury was handed down in March. Ortiz, at last report, had not posted the $1 million bond set by District Court Judge John Davis. He has a court hearing scheduled April 30.
The mothers of Ortiz and Seward had jointly pledged to help in the case when Ortiz made his first court appearance Feb. 22. Kisha Eaton, Seward’s mother, said it was an unintended killing and labeled it “senseless.”
Cheek was arrested once before in connection to the case. Within a week of the shooting, he was charged with intimidating a witness. He posted $10,000 bond and was released.
