Single gun shot killed woman
According to an autopsy report on a Feb. 16 double-murder in Henderson, Kenya Odessa Hodges died of a single gunshot to her chest.
Hodges and Jerome Kearney were each shot to death in the early-morning hours on the snowy Saturday. A single shot was fired at medium or longer range and pierced her heart, according to the report signed by Dr. Samuel D. Simmons of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh.
A report on Kearney has not yet been released.
Henderson police have charged 25-year-old Edward Demario Hawkins with two counts of first-degree murder in the case.
Statements from a medical examiner who helped at the scene indicated Hodges fell near a door of a motel room at about 3:15 a.m. Hodges was found on her right side facing up.
Signs of medical intervention included three electrical EKG attachment points on Hodges’ back, one of them near an exit wound a little lower and to the left from the sternum area entry wound.
There were multiple .40 caliber shell casings in the area.
A toxicology report indicated Hodges had a blood-alcohol content of .10, based on heart and urine testing.
Hawkins is included on a docket list of cases scheduled for hearings in Vance County Superior Court for motions and plea questions during the week of April 30.
Hawkins’ defense attorney Steven B. DeCillis stated in court records that witness statements to investigators do not support the murder charges against Hawkins.
According to DeCillis, in a Feb. 22 interview of Hawkins by an SBI agent, the agent suggested that if Hawkins made a statement to law enforcement that was consistent with what he already knew from his investigation, Hawkins could be charged with manslaughter instead of murder.
Hawkins surrendered peacefully to police on Feb. 26.
Bond remained at $500,000 and has not been posted, according to court records.
Hodges and Kearney were pronounced dead at the scene Feb. 16. Police said the shooting happened in a breezeway area at the Scottish Inns near Room 171.
