National Night Out deadline approaching
A deadline for participation is drawing near for the 15th annual Night Out Against Crime Aug. 6 in Henderson.
Agencies to be named on the event T-shirt need to sign on by Wednesday.
The Night Out gathering on Breckenridge Street is part of a national effort to focus communities on what needs to be done to reduce crime, starting with bolstering a sense of partnership between law enforcement and citizens.
Again this year, everyone getting to the Henderson police department location on Breckenridge in time will get one of the 800 T-shirts, wearing the same shirt as a statement of solidarity.
Lt. Irvin Robinson, leading a committee of 15, said nearly 1,000 people are expected. Music, speakers and hot dogs will be available.
“What Night Out Against Crime is supposed to do is get community and law enforcement working together on ways to reduce crime,” Robinson said. “We do have pretty close to 800 people out there.”
The rain date is the following night.
The local committee members cooperate with the national Night Out organization to report on how much of an impact they think the event had for the current year.
“We will send information to the national group,” Robinson said. “Today our committee met to get things together, to organize who does what.”
Being a part of the event and getting named on the T-shirt is free, Robinson said. It just takes a phone call to him at (252) 431-6061 or an email to email@example.com to get things started.
Agencies are encouraged to organize their own participation at the event, bringing tables and chairs, and some even set up booths and hand out literature. It is up to each agency to decide how they want to participate, Robinson said.
“If they give me a call before July 31, I can get them on the T-shirt,” Robinson said.
The event on Aug. 6 is scheduled to run 5 to 8 p.m.
The Henderson police, Vance County Sheriff’s Office, the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity and Vance County Schools partner in helping organize the annual Henderson event.
