Filing period closes at noon Friday
Filing for the fall municipal elections will close today at noon in board of elections offices in Vance, Granville and Warren counties.
Candidates have increased rapidly in the final week compared to the first six filing days, and all but one City Council race in Henderson has competition thus far. Residents will pick representatives for at-large Ward 1, at-large Ward 2, Ward 3 and Ward 4, and only incumbent Vernon Brown in Ward 4 was still set to run unopposed as Thursday’s window closed.
The city had no filings on the penultimate day.
Elsewhere in Vance County, however, incumbent Betsy Simpson filed to run for commissioner in Kittrell and Dean Dickerson put his name in as the first candidate for mayor of Middleburg.
Kittrell has one mayoral candidate and three for commissioner. Middleburg has single candidates, respectively, for mayor and commissioner.
Warren County registered three more candidates on Thursday — two for Norlina commissioner seats and one for Macon commissioner.
Incumbent Scooter Edwards and challenger Dorsey Capps pushed the Norlina commissioner race to seven candidates. Incumbent Glenn Riggan became the fourth candidate for a Macon commissioner seat.
The Norlina and Warrenton mayoral races each have two candidates, and Macon’s has one. Warrenton has six vying for commissioner spots entering the final day of filing.
In Granville County, no candidates filed in Oxford or Stovall on Thursday.
Oxford has two candidates for mayor and four for commissioner. Stovall has one candidate for mayor and two for commissioner.
