Monday gunfire kills teenager
Edward R. Proffitt has been charged with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old David Lawrence Harris on Monday night, according to Vance County Sheriff Peter White.
The shooting happened on Wendy Court and deputies made the arrest about 16 hours later on Tuesday. Proffitt lists a 179 Wendy Court address in Henderson.
Proffitt, 51, is charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter, indicating, White said, that investigators do not believe the shooting was a premeditated act.
A Vance County Sheriff’s Office report notes the time of the shooting as between 9 and 9:54, when a 911 call reporting the incident was made.
“There was an altercation inside the house involving the deceased, the person who was charged and a couple of other residents,” White said. “They all lived in the residence. The others are all related to each other and the deceased was living with them.”
White said Harris died at the scene. His body was sent to Raleigh for a forensic autopsy. Investigators continued to gather evidence for the case on Wednesday.
White said he would limit comments on the case because of the pending criminal court trial. He did confirm that there is presently no indication of drugs or money being involved in the case as a possible motive.
“We know that the deceased and one of the female residents had been involved with altercations that had been going on through the day,” White said.
An obituary announcement of Harris’ death noted his address as 1001 Water Street.
White said Proffitt remained at his Wendy Court home until arrested without incident. Arresting deputies processed him at the magistrate’s office where he received a $50,000 unsecured bond and was then released.
Proffitt is scheduled to appear in Vance County District Court on Feb. 10.
