David Lawrence Harris, 19, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest during an altercation with 51-year-old Edward R. Proffitt.

Harris sustained three gunshot wounds to his chest, according to the autopsy report by Dr. James Goodwin.

At the time of the incident, Harris was living with his girlfriend, their child and his girlfriend’s parents at 179 Wendy Court, Henderson.

According to Goodwin’s report, Harris was arguing with his girlfriend when he became belligerent and attacked his girlfriend’s mother.

Harris threatened to take the child and assaulted his girlfriend, the report states.

Proffitt, his girlfriend’s father, intervened and shot Harris three times in the left upper chest with a .45 caliber pistol, according to the report.

Vance County deputies arrested Proffitt about 16 hours later. He is facing one count of voluntary manslaughter. At the time of his arrest, investigators did not suspect premeditation.

Harris was pronounced dead on the scene when Emergency Medical Services were called 20 minutes later.

The report states that Harris had psychiatric problems with depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It also states Harris was taking Xanax.
