A 2-year-old girl was unharmed in a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon on N.C. 39 north of Henderson, but both drivers remained hospitalized on Thursday according to hospital spokesmen.

Traveling south in a green 1998 Jeep Cherokee was 65-year-old Andy Gilleland of Youngsville. He was taken by the Duke University Health Systems Life Flight helicopter to Duke University Medical Center, where he remained in serious condition on Thursday.

Northbound in a silver Honda Accord was Bethany Satterwhite, 29, of Henderson. She was taken by Vance County emergency responders to Maria Parham Medical Center where she remained in the surgical unit on Thursday. Her condition was not available.

State Trooper Presley Settles said he charged Satterwhite with traveling left of center, causing the crash in the 7000 block of N.C. 39 just before 3 p.m.

Settles confirmed that 2-year-old Riley Satterwhite was uninjured from the crash.

The crash closed both lanes of N.C. 39 for more than an hour before responders cleared the scene at about 4.

Settles said neither speed nor impairment were contributing factors in the crash.
