Farmers market grand opening set for Saturday
Residents will get a taste of summer at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market on Saturday.
The market will open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. as usual but with added activities to celebrate its grand opening.
Market manager Tracy Madigan said there will be live music, children’s games, face painting and tie-dyeing. About 15 vendors will set up, and some will introduce the year’s corn, tomato and melon crops.
She said there will be blood pressure and diabetic testing, as well.
The market has averaged about 200 customers per event since the facility officially opened June 11, according to Madigan.
“Everybody just loves the facility, and we’ve already got regulars that come in every Wednesday and Saturday,” she said.
Vendors and Vance County Cooperative Extension staff set the grand opening date at a farmers market vendor meeting May 22 to draw foot traffic, bring awareness to the facility’s location and highlight this year’s vendors.
So far, Madigan said she has seen people at the market on Wednesdays, but she expects Saturday regulars to increase as events around the community wind down.
“A lot of people are worn out from graduations and Relay for Life,” she said. “We’re just taking baby steps, one day at time.”
She said the biggest obstacle so far has been helping people find the farmers market.
The facility is located at 210 Southpark Drive, Henderson — off South Beckford Drive and beside the Social Security Administration Building.
Madigan said signs have been placed on Beckford Drive to make it easier to locate the facility on Saturday.
