Kids get free haircuts to look their best on the first day

In the midst of back-to-school giveaways and clearance sales, local youth got free haircuts Tuesday.

Platinum Cuts IV Barbershop provided students with free shape-ups and a lunch of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers.

Vicki Mitchell brought her son to get a haircut before he returned to Kerr-Vance Academy on Wednesday.

She said she was not aware of the free haircut day but was happy she could save some money.

“I think it’s a wonderful option,” she said. “There is so much money that you have to spend at the beginning of the school year anyway. It’s nice to get a free haircut and send my kid to school looking nice.”

More than 75 children participated in the event.

Owner Arnold Booth Jr. said he had seen better community involvement in the past.

“Every year we have a line around the sidewalk,” he said. “It’s not like that this year.”

Parents like Cynthia Gilmore were grateful for the opportunity, regardless.

“Sometimes you don’t have the money to do it, but you want your kids to look good for the first day of school,” she said. “I think this is a great thing they have for the community.”

Gilmore said she usually spends about $8 at the barbershop for each of her two sons.

Booth said he conducts the back-to-school event to promote positive minds and spirits.

“Hopefully we can encourage kids to make straight A’s this year,” he said. “If they look good and feel good, they might do better.”
