WARRENTON — A Norlina man appeared in Warren County District Court Wednesday to confirm attorney David Waters for his defense on a charge of voluntary manslaughter.

According to case documents, bond remains set at $250,000 for Tyrie Gonzalez. He is charged with the Saturday shooting death of Alton Harris, a 22-year-old acquaintance of Gonzalez from South Hill, Va.

In documents claiming need for a state-appointed attorney, Gonzalez claimed no income whatsoever from employment, welfare or otherwise. He also indicated a case of driving while impaired is pending against him in Warren County.

According to Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams, the shooting death took place at the 1101 U.S. 1 North residence where the 31-year-old Gonzalez is listed as living.

Williams said his deputies received a call at 1:24 p.m. Deputies and emergency responders went to the scene and a medical examiner arrived later that afternoon to begin a forensic investigation process.

Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
