Death of crash victim adds charge for driver
A Henderson woman’s death following a head-on crash on Vicksboro Road last week has resulted in a charge of misdemeanor death by vehicle against one driver, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.
First Sgt. Eric Thompson on Tuesday said the charge was added to the traffic case against 18-year-old David Wayne Satterwhite in the death of Drucilla Moses Henderson, 56, who died Thursday at Maria Parham Medical Center.
“The charge was added to the case yesterday,” Thompson said.
Thompson said Satterwhite crossed the center line and struck the other vehicle head-on.
“We consulted with the district attorney’s office, and that’s what they decided based on the circumstances,” Thompson said.
Satterwhite drove a red 1984 Chevrolet pickup eastward on Vicksboro Road into the oncoming lane in an attempt to avoid a stopped vehicle in front of him, according to Trooper James Aiken, who worked the accident scene.
Both the driver and passenger, 62-year-old Andrew Henderson and Drucilla Henderson, respectively, received injuries requiring hospitalization, according to Aiken.
According to Aiken, Satterwhite said he came up on a vehicle stopped to turn left and he swerved to avoid it.
“That’s when he struck the other vehicle head-on,” Aiken said.
The turn was at the entrance to Fox Pond Park. Aiken said the stopped car was not involved or at fault in the crash.
Aiken added that a load of compost mulch in Satterwhite’s pickup may have contributed to a weight problem to make it harder to slow the vehicle. The driver’s attention to the road situation was a possible factor also, according to the trooper.
Both Satterwhite and Andrew Henderson were injured but able to walk from their vehicles. After subsequent treatment at the scene, both were transported for further hospital care.
Satterwhite’s traffic charges include infractions on driving left of center and not having an operators’ license. He is not jailed. A hearing is scheduled in Vance County District Court for Oct. 17.
Satterwhite has no past incarceration or supervision record with the state, according to prison records.
According to her obituary, funeral services for Henderson, of 109 Grey Fox Lane, were scheduled for Tuesday at Spring Street Baptist Church in Henderson.
