Murder charged in fatal shooting
A Henderson woman is in jail on a murder charge in the shooting death of a Norlina man.
Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams said further arrests are pending investigation in connection to the incident at the BP fuel station near the Vance and Warren county line on the evening of New Year’s Day.
According to Williams, Royvitt Fortson was shot to death by 38-year-old Lenita Siplen Fortson. Royvitt Fortson was transported from the scene at 927 Oine Road, just off exit 229 of Interstate 85, at about 9:30 p.m. Jan. 1.
Royvitt Forston was 41 and listed with a 115 Freedom Circle address in Norlina.
Lenita Siplen Fortson, 38, is listed with a 511 Spring Court, Henderson, address.
Neither the district attorney’s office or the sheriff’s office would confirm if Royvitt Fortson and Lenita Fortson are related.
According to Warren County court records, Lenita Fortson is charged with one count of felony murder. A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Warren County District Court.
District Attorney Sam Currin said that the case is still evolving, and the role that Lenita Fortson played involved aiding and abetting a homicide.
“I think she is the one that got him there,” Currin said.
Williams declined comment on the nature of the incident, if planning or conspiracy was involved or if it was robbery related. He said release of further information could hinder the ongoing investigation.
State troopers, Vance and Warren county deputies and a unit from the Henderson Police Department assisted in stopping the vehicle about 10 miles south of the Wise exit, just inside the Vance County line, Williams said. Warren deputies took two persons in custody for questioning, he added.
Williams said that he and his investigators, with help from the State Bureau of Investigation, worked through the night and all day Wednesday last week to piece together what happened.
Williams said further details would be released following a complete investigation.
