OXFORD — After about a decade of his leadership, Leonard Peace Sr. was not re-elected to chair the Granville County Board of Education.

Brenda Dickerson-Daniel was elected at Monday evening’s board meeting by a vote of 5-2. Donnie Boyd is the vice chairman for the coming year.

“I’m pleased to serve and I’m grateful for the board’s trust in me,” Dickerson-Daniel said by telephone Thursday.

Peace estimated he’d been chairman eight to 10 years. He’s served on the board for 20 years.

“It’s just another election,” he said in way of explaining the change. “My whole approach was if a child can be better served in another way to be successful, we ought to offer it.”

In noting accomplishments during his tenure, he said the most recent was opening a magnet school this past fall with sixth- and ninth-graders. He also said a career center at Granville Central High School is about to be built.

Both Dickerson-Daniel and Peace are optimistic for the future.

“We’re going to work together,” Dickerson-Daniel said.
“I’ll be there,” Peace said.
