Granville sheriff’s office seizes 140 pounds of pot
BUTNER — The Granville County Sheriff’s Office seized 140 pounds of marijuana, worth $700,000, during a vehicle traffic stop Tuesday on Interstate 85 southbound near Butner.
Around 5 p.m., members of the Granville County Sheriff’s Office’s Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Unit stopped a tour bus with a separate luggage compartment.
Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins Jr. said deputies found three large duffle bags containing multiple bundles of marijuana.
“The drug dogs hit on this luggage compartment under the bus,” Wilkins said Tuesday.
Though the seizure was not the biggest the sheriff’s office had seen, it was definitely a significant one, Wilkins said.
No suspects have been taken into custody, he said, because none of the riders on the bus claimed responsibility for the luggage.
He said the type of hydroponic marijuana and packaging indicated it originated from a northern location, possibly Canada or New York.
“We contacted law enforcement in that area to be aware of what to look out for,” he said.
