Stray gunfire hits Yancey Lane resident

Two stray rounds of gunfire struck a woman on Yancey Lane Tuesday night, sending her to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Vance County Sheriff Peter White said that friends were there to help Lakesha Williams, 30, of Carver School Road, and his deputies are looking for the suspected shooter.

“This happened a few minutes before 10 p.m.,” White said. “A friend took her to the hospital. We haven’t made an arrest yet.”

Williams said that she does not believe she was targeted by the gunman, but that shots rang out while a number of her friends were outside in the yard enjoying the unusually warm weather at a residence in the 300 block of Yancey Lane.

“We were outside grilling,” Williams said. “Suddenly there were all these shots, like, pop, pop. I thought it felt like someone was cutting me with a piece of glass.”

One round grazed her leg, and the other lodged in her thigh. The deputy’s report for the incident noted injuries as major, but Williams was out and walking on her own on Wednesday.

“It’s still in there,” she said. “I feel better now, though.”
