Henderson to seek grant

Henderson will be in the running for an improvement grant to add restrooms at Fox Pond Park.

The city council agreed to apply for a $15,000 grant through the Francis Abbot Powers Endowment 2014 fund. The deadline for submissions is July 18.

If selected, the Henderson-Vance Parks and Recreation Department could construct restrooms and repair the concessions facility.

The council also moved ahead with the state Department of Transportation project to widen Chavasse Avenue between Young Avenue and U.S. 1, which includes funding for installing a curb, gutter and sidewalks.

They voted to approve the project terms on the conditions that the city not be liable during construction — excluding the right of ways — and that it be allowed to review the bids.

“There were some areas where we had to work things out with DOT, as far as liability,” said Assistant City Manager Frank Frazier. “We didn’t want to assume any liability during construction because it’s not our construction project.”

The council can also decline participation if the costs exceed the city’s budget for the project.

The next step is to obtain one final easement, or right of way, to allow for construction of the three-lane road and sidewalk.

“We could not widen the road with the existing easements,” he said.

Frazier said he hopes the property owners will finalize the easement agreements within the coming weeks.
