Toddler support initiative on tap Saturday
Mothers can get free supplies for their babies this weekend.
Connetta Terry, preschool teacher at Pinkston Elementary, is holding a baby item food drive Saturday at Eastside Barber Shop and Salon, 81 Vicksboro Road.
The event will start at 3 p.m. with food and giveaways. Mothers, both single or married, can attend to get items such as strollers, bottles, diapers and milk.
Terry said she collected the items from the community throughout the year.
She had a drive last year, as well. Carla Lancaster, a local mother, said she attended and won a car seat, baby food and bottles, among other items.
“It was great, and they had plenty of stuff,” she said. “It was definitely a start.”
This year, Terry said she has more items to give away, but she is still taking diapers and bottles.
“I will take any of that no matter how much I have,” she said.
She said she started the drive last year when she noticed how the economy had affected her families.
“I was sitting in my classroom, and I was thinking about how much my kids needed things and was thinking about how I could help,” she said.
She organized the drive, collected the items and served more than 80 families last year.
She said she hopes this year’s event will be bigger and better.
“I got a lot of texts and compliments from people that had attended last year,” she said. “A couple of moms had more kids so I will be seeing them again. I am hoping that we can come out with more items and impact more families, as well.”
