The discovery of a man found dead Sunday at his home is being investigated as a homicide robbery by Vance County deputies.

Sheriff Peter White said 63-year-old Roger Dell Tant was most likely shot to death in his home at 3985 Weldon’s Mill Road, Henderson, on Thursday.

According to White, investigators have yet to determine if items are missing from the home. He added the official report notes the incident as a homicide robbery that is under further investigation.

“My deputy who did the report indicated a robbery, but we don’t know if there are any items missing,” White said. “We are treating this as a homicide. It appears he may have been shot. We are thinking he may have died sometime on Thursday.”

White said that Thursday was the last time someone saw Tant alive.

“He was discovered on Sunday afternoon by a friend of his who said friends and family had not seen him since Thursday,” White said.

The friend is a man named in the incident report as living about eight blocks away in a trailer home on Weldon’s Mill Road. The report noted that he approached Tant’s home at about 1 p.m.

According to White, the visiting man noticed a foul odor, and turning the knob, he found the door to be unlocked. When discovering the body in the living room of the home, the man retreated and called 911.

“The medical examiner came to the scene,” White added. “We are waiting for autopsy results.”

White is hopeful that anyone with further information that can help solve the case will not hesitate to call the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at (252) 738-2200 or Crime Stoppers at (252) 492-1925.

Rewards of up to $2,000 are available, and informant identities are kept confidential. Crime Stoppers can also be accessed at hvcrimestoppers.com online.
