Northern Vance teacher indicted in Wake County
A Wake County grand jury on Tuesday indicted Northern Vance High School teacher and coach Michael Aaron Zovistoski on charges of statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a minor.
At least three felony counts transferred to Wake County Superior Court Wednesday, officials with the clerk’s office confirmed. They could not confirm as of press time if a fourth charge noted in district court files, felony use of a computer to solicit a minor for sex, would also transfer.
The case files against Zovistoski were moving from to Superior Court during the day Wednesday. According to officials with the clerk’s office, the move cancelled a hearing in Wake County District Court scheduled for Thursday morning.
According to a grand jury indictment signed by Melanie Shekita, an assistant district attorney for Wake County, Zovistoski willfully and feloniously engaged in multiple sexual acts on Aug. 15 with a 14-year-old female identified by her initials and date of birth.
The evidence presented by a witness with the Apex Police Department also indicated the 25-year-old Zovistoski engaged or attempted improper and indecent liberties with the female in order to arouse or gratify sexual desire, according to the indictment.
A grand jury foreperson signed the indictment on two charges of felony statutory rape and one charge of felony taking of indecent liberties, certifying it as a true bill of indictment based on probable cause.
The Wake County Detention Center confirmed Zovistoski, a Franklinton resident, remained jailed Wednesday on $350,000 bond. Officials with the court clerk’s office indicated his next date for a hearing is scheduled for Feb. 18 in Superior Court.
According to a televised published report last month, police arrested Zovistoski in Apex where he had arranged to meet with a 14-year-old female victim for sex. The report says he solicited her using a computer.
The incident did not happen on school grounds at Northern Vance. As of Wednesday, Zovistoski was listed on the Vance County Schools website directory as a staff member.
An email sent to Zovistoski using his staff email account with Vance County Schools was returned as undeliverable, which is consistent with an account being closed.
A phone request for information on Zovistoski’s employment status with the schools was not answered on Wednesday. Vance County Schools were closed due to inclement weather.
Zovistoski had been active with Northern Vance as a wrestling coach.
