Board approves additional changes to administrator contract policy
OXFORD — Although public interest in Monday night’s meeting of the Granville County Board of Education focused on concerns about administrator pay, the board conducted business on a number of other issues.
The board approved several revisions to district policy, including the section on administrators’ contracts, which states the criteria for granting, extending or renewing contracts. Another policy on the same subject was adopted March 3; it describes the procedures for executing contracts, including requiring they must be approved by a majority vote of the school board.
Michael Dann presented the Maria Woodson Dann Educator Award to three teachers. The award is named for his mother, a Granville County teacher who died in a car accident. This year’s recipients are Amanda Weldon, Joe Toler-Oak Hill Elementary School; Bridget Craddock, West Oxford Elementary School; and Kristen Elliott, Creedmoor Elementary School.
Emily Parham, a senior at J.F. Webb High School of Health and Life Sciences, was introduced as the recipient of the Granville County Schools Prospective Teacher Scholarship, which is given in the form of a $5,600 loan. The loan will be forgiven if Parham teaches for four years in Granville County Schools.
Col. Skip Lewis, Army JROTC instructor, presented the J.F. Webb Campus Academic Team, which advanced to the finals of the national Army JROTC Academic Bowl.
“These kids epitomize what’s good about Granville County,” he said, saying they competed against 3,700 schools nationwide.
The team was one of 81 teams nationally and one of four from North Carolina to reach the finals in April.
Seven high school seniors shared reflections on their educational journeys in Granville County Schools. The speakers were:
• Kara Gann, South Granville High School of Health and Life Sciences.
• Grayson Parrish, South Granville High School of Integrated Technology and Leadership.
• Aquayla Swann, Granville Central High School.
• Shaderrika Harris, the Center for Innovative Learning.
• Brionna Royster, J.F. Webb High School.
• Zachary Watkins, J.F. Webb High School of Health and Life Sciences.
• Martha Cervantes, Granville Early College High School.
Jon Long, of Boomerang Design, presented a progress report on work on construction at Granville Central. The board scheduled a special meeting for July 14 to accept bids and award a construction contract.
