Community groups help students get ready
Local organizations will partner this week to help students get ready for school.
Cedar Hurst Apartments, 720 Highland Ave., is hosting a back-to-school bash from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The event is a collaboration with New Sandy Creek Baptist Church, which is providing back-to-school supplies for students and North Henderson Baptist Church — providing hot dogs and fixings.
Ginealla Hart-Wagner, site manager for Cedar Hurst Apartments, said working with the churches has been a success partnership so far.
“It would be great if more churches could do stuff like this, she said. “It would just make a wonderful community.”
During the event, students can enjoy a magic show, a bouncy house and balloon art and show cones, as well.
Wal-Mart and the United Way of Vance County have also joined to collect school supplies for low-income children.
United way volunteers will be outside of the store from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday asking for donations.
Executive director Nancy Gray said school supplies received will be divided among the schools in the Vance County system and placed in guidance counselors’ offices for student pickup.
