Second arrest in 2009 murder

The Henderson Police Department Criminal Investigation Division has made a second arrest in connection with the 2009 murder of Montrell Alston.

Darius Montreal Benson, 26, 858 Eastway Drive, Henderson, was arrested March 13 on charges of first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and first-degree burglary.

Benson was arrested at the Vance County Jail, where he was being detained on unrelated charges.

He was jailed without bond after appearing before the magistrate. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled in Vance County District Court on Monday.

Alan Joseph Gibson, 37, of 1316 Lehman St., Henderson, was arrested March 5 in connection with Alston’s death. He was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and first-degree burglary.

Gibson was placed in the Vance County Jail without bond. He also had a preliminary hearing in Vance County District Court on Monday.

Alston, 28, of 687 Adams St., Henderson, was shot in his home at 1:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009.

He was pronounced dead after Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at the scene.

Robert Smith, 53, of 687 Adams St., Henderson, was also shot.

He was taken to Maria Parham Medical Center, but Smith’s injuries were not life-threatening.

At the time, officers said robbery may have been the motivation for the incident.
