Police jailed a Henderson man after responding to a gunshot being fired at the Maria Parham Medical Center emergency room on Ruin Creek Road Thursday night.

Jan-Michael Vincent Lassiter, 29, of 106 Gwynn Pond Road, faces charges of shooting in an occupied building, carrying a concealed firearm, vandalism and being armed to the terror of the public, among other infractions.

Lt. Christopher Ball in a statement said police were “conducting security of a mental patient” when they heard a gunshot. The shot was heard from a restroom in the emergency room area at about 6 p.m.

A police report on the incident noted a bathroom mirror and wall as receiving damage along with a storage room wall. Police collected a $700 Smith and Wesson revolver, four bullets and a spent casing.

Also recovered as evidence in the case were photographs placed onto a CD and a gunshot residue test kit.

Police on Thursday night said that Lassiter was a visitor of a patient in the emergency room.

Lassiter is also charged with disorderly conduct, discharging a firearm in city limits and concealing a handgun after consuming alcohol.

Police handed Lassiter over to jail authorities after he failed to post a $60,000 bond set for the case, according to Lt. Alan Hedgepeth. A preliminary hearing is scheduled in Vance County District Court on April 9.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident, according to police.
