Recommendation of superintendent aims to get raises
After six consecutive years of budget cuts and low per pupil funding, the Vance County school board is seeking relief.
At its meeting on Monday, Superintendent Ronald Gregory will recommend the board appeal the N.C. General Assembly’s legislation that requires school boards to offer four-year contracts and bonuses to 25 percent of eligible teachers employed with the school system more than three years.
During the meeting, Gregory will present resolutions asking the General Assembly to allow the board to keep the $10 million that the legislation allocates and ask that teachers salaries instead be raised.
Also at the meeting, the board will give its final approval to take a $19 million budget plan to the Vance County Board of Commissioners.
The budget request includes funds to accommodate potential salary increases, full teacher supplement payouts, the addition of a technology fund and rising maintenance costs of school facilities.
The budget was first accepted at a called meeting March 31 where the committee recognized that the school was behind in funding and pushed the district finance officer Robert Newby to include anything and everything that schools may need.
After finance reports, the board will hear committee reports that address N.C. Sound security bids and recommendations for teachers and faculty appointments scheduled for the upcoming months.
The Southern Vance Jazz Band, Carver Elementary School and Vance Medical Academy will give presentations.
