Superior Court manslaughter case will wait at least a day
Daquan Ortiz’s case in Vance County Superior Court on Tuesday was pushed back a day.
Ortiz, represented by Nick Bagshawe, was expected to go before Judge Elaine Bushfan near the noon hour. He faces a charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection to the Feb. 21 shooting death of Ja’Quon Ty’Ree Seward.
Ortiz was brought to the courthouse from the Vance County Jail, but was subsequently returned following a lunch break and did not appear when called in the afternoon portion of the day’s session. He is expected to appear today.
Ortiz’s bond is set at $1 million.
A grand jury returned an indictment against Ortiz in March.
Corey Cheek Jr., Gary Treshon Holden and Ramek Holden have each been indicted on felony first-degree murder charges in Seward’s death. The three were each also indicted on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, pattern gang activity and inciting to riot.
A 14-year-old juvenile has also been arrested in the case.
