A single-vehicle crash last Wednesday night near Aycock Elementary School was fatal for the driver.

Joseph Levon “Joe” Lewis Sr., 66, of 97 Vincent Hoyle Road, died when the 2000 Ford Mustang he was driving crashed on Carey Chapel Road. According to James Faulk of the N.C. Highway Patrol, Lewis was driving north, swerved left off the roadway, struck a culvert and then trees.

First Sgt. Eric Thompson said that Faulk’s report includes a reference to suspicion that alcohol could have been a factor in the accident. Even though Lewis was alone in the vehicle and no charges are contemplated, tests on alcohol are required by law.

“We have to wait on the toxicology report from the medical examiner to be sure,” Thompson said.

Thompson confirmed Lewis died at the scene of the crash that was called in to dispatchers at 7:21 that evening. No other vehicles are noted as involved, and speed is not noted as a factor.
