The first baby born in Vance County this year was Aaron Alonzo Santos, birthed at Maria Parham Medical Center at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Santos weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces at birth. He is the second son for Norma and Renato Santos, who have an 11-year-old that attends Henderson Middle.

“It surprised me,” said Norma Santos, Aaron’s proud mother. “I think one is our lucky number. My little boy was born on August first, too.”

Norma wasn’t due until Jan. 7, but got an early surprise when she became the only woman to go into labor at the Henderson hospital on Jan. 1.

“He was the only one on the first,” said Tracie Haley, who has been a nurse at Maria Parham for 12 years. “There were four born on the second, and several on the 31st.

“We usually average three a day, probably 65 to 70 deliveries a month.”

Haley couldn’t recall another time when only one baby was born on New Year’s Day.

The Santos family has lived in Henderson for 12 years.
