Two recognized by police peers
Two Individual Commendation awards were presented at a recent Henderson Police Department staff meeting.
Sgt. Jessica West and Lt. Brandon Bishop were the recipients from Capt. Marcus Barrow, the interim police chief. In a prepared statement, Barrow said the two were recognized for exceptional work and performance through the department’s Employee Awards Program as nominated by supervisors and co-workers.
According to the department, “the Individual Commendation Award is issued to officers that have ‘performed efficient and valuable services to the Department…in the performance of duties over an extended period of time.’”
Both officers received a certificate and a uniform Award Pin from Barrow.
West was named the Police Officer of the Year by the Henderson-Vance Optimist Club. She is a volunteer coach and board member for the Vance County Special Olympics, a volunteer and board member of Henderson-Vance County Safe Kids Coalition, coordinates Community Watch in housing areas or apartment complexes, and established Business Watch.
In the department, she is a crime scene technician and member of the bicycle patrol unit. She’s been with the department since 2004.
Bishop was named the Pearson Officer of the Year by Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers in 2012. He was instrumental in a nuisance abatement case at the former Kerr Lake Inn, prepared the department’s breaking and entering prevention brochures and works as a gang identification officer. He’s been with the department since 2002.
