Filing period passes halfway
Filing for the fall elections crossed the midway point when offices closed Friday, and plenty of seats are available.
Only two contested races are assured among the municipal elections of Henderson, Kittrell, Middleburg, Oxford, Stovall, Warrenton, Macon and Norlina. And both of those are in Warrenton, with two having filed for mayor and four having filed for three town commissioner seats.
No candidates having filed at all litter a number of races, including one Henderson council seat, and all seats in Kittrell and Middleburg.
On Friday, board of election offices in both Vance and Granville counties confirmed no filings during the day for races in The Dispatch coverage area. Warren County had one.
The filing period ends at noon on Friday, July 19.
In Henderson, the at-large Ward 2 spot has yet to get a candidate. Sara Coffey has filed for at-large Ward 1, Melissa Elliott for Ward 3 and Vernon Brown for Ward 4. Coffey and Brown are incumbents.
In Kittrell, seats for the mayor and three town commissioners are without candidates, and in Middleburg, seats for the mayor and three members of the town council are without candidates.
In Oxford, three incumbents have filed: Jackie Sergent for mayor, and commissioners Ron Bullock and Danny Currin. Mayor Janet Parrott has filed in Stovall, but there are no candidates yet for commissioners’ seats.
Warrenton will, at a minimum, have a mayor’s race between Tim Ennis and incumbent Walter Gardner Jr. The three commissioners’ seats are being sought by incumbents Kimberly Rae Harding and Mary Hunter, along with challengers Robert Schuerch and Deborah Speer.
Incumbents Dwight Pearce (mayor) and Lou Stultz (commissioner) are the only filings in Norlina.
Mayor Robert Evans filed for re-election in Macon on Friday. Wanda Thompson, an incumbent commissioner, has also filed.
