Suspect shot, wounded by Winston-Salem police
WINSTON-SALEM — Two Winston-Salem police officers have shot and wounded a suspect after a confrontation.
Police said an officer stopped a car shortly before 1 a.m. Friday and there was a confrontation and the officer fired at the suspect.
Police say the car driven by 32-year-old James Edward Plater drove away and toward another officer also fired at the car. The car then struck a building.
Plater was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was in serious condition after being shot several times.
Police did not say how many times Plater was shot or how many shots were fired by the two officers.
A passenger in the car, Aonta De'Vaux Ruth, 32, was treated and released from the hospital for a gunshot wound.
The officers are on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.
